About the Role
Balfour Beatty is looking to make a critical senior leadership hire and appoint a Project Director to lead the delivery of the Teesdock Road Substation project, based in the North East of England. The role sits within Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution business, a delivery partner to National Grid on the £8bn Electricity Transmission Partnership, responsible for delivering major high‑voltage substation infrastructure across England and Wales. The Project Director is a high‑impact, end‑to‑end leadership role, with full accountability for the successful delivery of one of Balfour Beatty’s largest substation projects to date. Reporting into the Operations Director, the role will lead a large, multidisciplinary team and own all aspects of programme, commercial performance, safety, stakeholder management and delivery strategy from mobilisation through to completion.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Deliver the Power T&D business strategy, especially securing work and achieving project outcomes
* Instill a strong safety culture and develop the capability of our project teams to take personal responsibility through strong visible leadership
* Plan, control and manage the delivery of large complex projects utilising the necessary resources and skills within the agreed parameters of cost, timescales and quality
* Lead engagement with design and engineering teams to ensure the successful development of the technical solution in line with customer requirements and specifications
* Develop and support the operational teams to be successful by talking positively, listening actively and encouraging constantly
* Work collaboratively with the Heads of Operations, Executive Leadership Team and other parts of Balfour Beatty to deliver Power T&D strategic objectives and enhance solid working relationships as one team across the business
* Pro‑actively manage the customer relationship during delivery, including change and decision making to effectively manage expectations
* Collaborate relentlessly to ensure best opportunities for Power T&D are targeted and resources are utilised in the most efficient way
* Ensure procurement plans are available in line with the overall project plans, such that material/resources/supply chain can be delivered to meet scheduled deadlines
* Plan and implement quality management processes to ensure defect‑free delivery
* Manage commercial and business risks to achieve targets
* Advocate consistency and reliability of digital data to support successful project delivery – data‑driven decisions
Who We’re Looking For
* Proven experience at senior management level
* Sound track record of the management and delivery of technically complex projects
* Good understanding of the standard forms of contracts
* Effective team management skills which empower, influence & inspire others to build effective teams, providing mentoring and support to members of the team where required
* Proven track record in tendering and managing complex projects, including subcontractors
* Commercial awareness with knowledge of both budgetary and financial control
* Ability to work across conflicting interest groups to develop solutions to complex operational and commercial problems
* Comfortable with ambiguity, able to tease out sensitive issues and lead cross‑functional teams towards solutions
* Good knowledge of performance evaluation techniques and key metrics
* A record of a solutions‑based approach to problem solving
* Able to undertake work in high‑pressure situations
* The ability to see the business vision and inspire this shared vision amongst the team
