This role is based within Cellular Pathology / Tissue Sciences at Unilabs UK, primarily supporting Specimen Reception services in Euston, London. Working under indirect supervision, the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) supports the delivery of an efficient, accurate and high-quality pathology service. The role involves rotating through laboratory areas to maintain proficiency across techniques and supporting Biomedical Scientists and Medical Technical Officers with pre- and post-analytical laboratory tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Carry out laboratory support and supervised technical tasks in line with SOPs.
* Receive, check and process specimens, liaising with service users where required.
* Accurately enter and retrieve sensitive patient data using Pathology IT systems and LIMS.
* Prepare, pack and dispatch samples to internal and external laboratories.
* Prepare reagents and solutions according to departmental protocols.
* Archive tissue specimens, slides and samples, ensuring accurate record keeping.
* Dispose of tissue and hazardous materials safely and in accordance with protocols.
* Maintain stock levels, rotate supplies and complete stock logs.
* Perform basic preventative maintenance of equipment as required.
* Participate in quality management systems, audits and continuous improvement.
* Ensure compliance with health & safety, infection control and confidentiality policies.
* Work flexibly across laboratory areas as per rota to ensure service quality.
* Contribute to a culture of quality, professionalism and continuous development.
* Communicate effectively with laboratory colleagues and attend departmental meetings.
* Participate in training, CPD and competency development activities.
Qualifications & Education
* 2 A-levels or equivalent (essential)
* 5 GCSEs (Grade C/4 or above), including Maths, English and Science (essential)
* Science A-level (desirable)
Experience
* Experience working in a busy laboratory or healthcare environment
* Understanding of health & safety in a laboratory setting
* Experience working as part of a team
* Knowledge of quality management and laboratory protocols (desirable)
* Experience in stock management or specimen handling (desirable)
Skills & Abilities
* Highly organised with strong attention to detail
* Ability to work accurately and concentrate for extended periods
* Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and Pathology IT systems
