What will you be doing as our new Managing Quantity Surveyor?
As Managing Quantity Surveyor (Project Commercial Manager), you will be accountable for the commercial and cost management of a project or programme of projects from inception through to close-out.
Reporting directly to the Integrated Projects Leader (IPL), you’ll ensure maximum efficiencies are achieved while maintaining full compliance with Alliance and Anglian Water governance. You’ll act as a commercial challenger and trusted advisor, providing clear commercial leadership across all project matters.

🔑 Key Responsibilities
Management of Commercials
* Ensure robust cost estimates aligned with project scope
* Lead and support commercial and procurement strategies alongside Senior Buyers
* Ensure tender processes are followed correctly
* Ensure subcontracts are accurately prepared, reflect agreed scope, and are managed in line with contractual requirements
Robust Cost Management
* Provide accurate live forecasting aligned to the project programme and WBS/CBS
* Monitor actual costs against baseline estimates, challenging variances where required
* Report on cost performance, identifying causes of variance and implementing resolutions
Contract Management
* Ensure Alliance contracts are administered correctly
* Oversee timely issue of Early Warnings and advise the IPL on compliance matters
* Maintain accurate records for audit and cost assurance purposes
* Ensure final accounts are prepared accurately and on time
Project & Programme Risk
* Ensure mitigation plans are in place and implemented
* Proactively manage opportunities and efficiency initiatives 📈
* Monitor progress against efficiency plans and report variances to the IPL
* Report any withheld, disputed, or disallowed costs
👥 Team Leadership
* Lead and manage a small commercial team
* Mentor, develop, and support team members

About You
To be successful in this role, you will ideally:
* Be degree educated and hold RICS, CIOB, or CICES accreditation
* Have demonstrable experience managing complex, multi-million-pound projects
* Be confident managing change and challenging decisions constructively
* Have strong experience working with the NEC suite of contracts
* Bring excellent negotiating, estimating, and stakeholder management skills
You’ll operate with a high level of integrity and fairness, acting as the commercial conscience of the IPL. You’ll champion collaboration, open communication, and accountability, leading with a strong commercial focus.
