Care Support Worker – Help People Live Their Best Lives Every Day
Charles Harper House is a small supported housing service providing personalised, 1:1 support to adults with learning disabilities and sensory impairments, including people who are Deaf and use British Sign Language (BSL). The service consists of 8 self‑contained flats within a communal building, shared spaces, and a garden. Support is delivered on a 24/7 rota, with one sleep‑in staff member overnight and daytime/evening cover between 7am and 10pm, usually in 7‑hour shifts. We’re looking for caring, flexible, and resilient Care Support Workers who are confident working 1:1 and comfortable supporting people with a variety of needs. BSL skills or Deaf awareness are a key part of this role, and we welcome applicants who already have experience or who are motivated to continue developing these skills.
What You’ll Do
* Provide 1:1 support to individuals, tailored to their needs and communication preferences
* Support with daily living tasks, routines, and personal care where required
* Communicate effectively with Deaf customers, including using signed BSL where appropriate
* Encourage independence, choice, and self‑expression
* Support people to access hobbies, interests, and community activities
* Maintain safe, clean, and welcoming living environments
* Build positive working relationships with colleagues, families, and professionals
* Complete accurate records and contribute to reviews and team meetings
* Work flexibly across day, evening, weekend, and sleep‑in shifts
Essential – What You’ll Need
* This role is part‑time, working 22.5 hours per week, with a requirement to work flexibly across a 24/7 rota, including weekends and occasional sleep‑ins.
* A kind, patient, and person‑centred approach
* Ability to work 1:1 and adapt to a range of needs
* Good communication skills, including basic written skills for record keeping
* Respect for diversity and commitment to inclusive support
* Ability to pass a satisfactory DBS check
BSL / Deaf Awareness
* Level 2 BSL (ideal), or
* Practical BSL experience or Deaf awareness (for example through work, volunteering, or family/friends)
* Willingness to continue developing BSL skills (a Level 1 BSL cohort is planned)
Desirable (not Essential)
* Previous experience in care or support (paid or voluntary)
* Experience supporting people with learning disabilities and/or sensory impairments
* Care Certificate or NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care
