Your mission in CMbE
Working as an Assistant Cost Accountant, you’ll be responsible for weekly monitoring, querying, and reporting of manual inventory adjustments, as well as supporting the development and maintenance of Inventory SOX controls. The role includes updating bill of material costs, investigating costing queries, and completing monthly variance analysis and standard cost updates. Strong Excel skills—covering data preparation, analysis, and interpretation—are essential, along with solid IT acumen and a willingness to continue developing your technical capabilities.
You’ll help ensure a smooth monthly automated close of system ledgers and prepare cost of sales and inventory journal provisions, while maintaining strong SOX compliance and accurate approval routes. Balance sheet reconciliations will be carried out, alongside forecasting cost of sales, margins, and inventory levels, and assessing the cost–benefit of Capex and efficiency proposals. Problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and clear verbal and written communication will support you in delivering high‑quality work across these areas.
The position also involves contributing to externally audited stock takes and WIP checks, overseeing the annual revaluation of standard costs, and coordinating the preparation and authorisation of aged inventory write‑offs. Additionally, you’ll provide financial guidance and support for government‑funded development projects.
About You
The successful candidate should have previous experience in a busy, time‑pressured finance department, particularly in producing journals and meeting tight reporting deadlines. All round knowledge of financial accounting systems and procedures is crucial to excel in this role, supported by studying towards a formal accountancy qualification (CIMA/ACCA). Holding an Associates of Accounting Technicians (AAT) level 4 or equivalent qualification is essential.
Experience within a manufacturing environment, especially using MRP or ERP systems, would be highly advantageous. Exposure to operating under US GAAP or IFRS, and working within a SOX‑regulated or strong control‑focused environment, is also desirable. Any hands‑on involvement in systems development or internal process improvement will be considered a valuable asset.
