Job Summary

St Giles Hospice is a leading provider of specialist palliative care services, committed to delivering compassionate, patient‑centred care for individuals with life‑limiting illnesses. The specialist doctor will support patients and families in achieving the best possible quality of life through an interdisciplinary approach, including medical, nursing, psychosocial, and spiritual care.

About Us

St Giles Hospice is a registered charity founded in 1983 by the Reverend Paul Brothwell. We provide individually tailored care, free of charge, either at the hospice or in patients' own homes across our communities. We spend close to £10 million a year providing our specialist services. With just 18% of this funded by the Government, we rely heavily on donations and income generation from the local community.

Job Description

The Specialist Doctor in Palliative Care reports to the Director for Clinical Services and is part of the Hospice Senior Leadership Team. The role includes the following responsibilities:

* Provide specialist medical management for patients with complex palliative care needs in the hospice and community settings.
* Ensure continuity of care on the inpatient unit and in the community, supporting the medical team for day‑to‑day management of patients admitted to the IPU.
* Lead multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and contribute to holistic patient management plans.
* Perform full holistic assessments of patients and provide ongoing medical review.
* Prescribe appropriately in line with hospice and West Midlands Palliative Care Physicians Guidelines for symptom control, maintaining accurate drug charts.
* Support ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and home visits as required.
* Provide clinical leadership and support to junior medical staff, trainees, nursing teams, and allied health professionals.
* Participate in the weekend medical rota and support effective symptom control, advance care planning, and end‑of‑life care discussions.
* Help develop and maintain a comprehensive quality strategy covering patient safety, risk management, clinical effectiveness, and patient experience.
* Contribute to clinical governance activities, including audits, incident reviews, and risk assessments.
* Deliver training and mentorship for medical trainees, nursing staff, and other professionals in palliative care principles and practice.
* Collaborate on research studies and innovation projects that enhance patient care and clinical excellence.
* Represent the hospice at regional and national forums, advocating for palliative care excellence.
* Build strong working relationships with local GPs, hospital teams, and community services to ensure seamless care pathways.
