Overview
Applications are invited for an appointment to join the existing team of Consultant Emergency General Surgeons based at Wirral University Teaching Hospital. The successful candidate will join the General Surgery Directorate with a current team of 4 Emergency General Surgeons and work collaboratively with the current workforce of 12 GI surgeons.
Responsibilities
* Work as part of the Emergency General Surgeons to cover the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) during the day (8:00 to 20:00).
* Participate in day-to-day emergency surgical care including ward rounds on SEU and the surgical ward, ambulatory clinic and emergency theatre cover and operating.
* Attend handover from the on-call GI surgeon (overnight) at 08:00 and undertake handover to the GI surgeon for the night at 17:30–18:00; the on-call GI surgeon oversees the emergency theatre from 17:30.
* Collaborate with the GI surgeons already in post who provide emergency cover overnight and work to create a happy, productive, and cooperative environment.
* Ensure assigned SPA (supporting professional activity) and administrative time is respected.
Candidate profile / Qualifications
* Committed to a career in emergency surgery; suitable for those recently achieving CCT who wish to develop emergency skills further, or experienced surgeons seeking a new challenge without night-time work.
* Ability to adapt as part of a team and to work closely with GI colleagues who provide emergency cover overnight.
