JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Classroom Assistant – Special Educational Needs
REPORTS TO: The Principal, through the class teacher
JOB PURPOSE: Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and care of pupils with special educational needs in or outside the classroom.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The specific duties will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.
SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
* Assist the teacher in supporting and caring for pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs such as dietary, feeding, toileting, etc.
* Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils supported.
* Assist with authorised programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in their evaluation, and encourage pupil participation.
* Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher's guidance.
* Assist with operational difficulties and medical/clinical issues related to pupils' disabilities.
* Support in implementing behavioural management programmes as directed.
* Assist pupils in moving around the school and on/off transport.
GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
* Help pupils learn effectively in both group and individual settings by managing the learning environment, including clarifying instructions, ensuring the use of equipment, motivating pupils, reinforcing learning, promoting independence, and helping pupils stay on task.
* Maintain confidentiality regarding home/pupil/teacher/school matters.
* Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
* Prepare resources and materials for pupils and play sessions.
* Supervise groups or individual pupils during activities, including extracurriculars and ICT use, as directed.
* Assist with off-site activities following risk assessments.
* Supervise and support pupils during play, cloakroom, toileting, and administer prescribed medicines as needed.
* Ensure a safe environment and report any signs indicating a pupil needs urgent attention.
ADMINISTRATION
* Assist with classroom administration and record keeping of pupil progress.
* Provide feedback to the teacher and help produce charts, displays, and resource catalogues.
OTHER DUTIES
* Attend training sessions.
* Assist work placement students.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority.

SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Measured at shortlisting and interview.
Qualifications and Experience: Option 1: Level 2 qualification and 6 weeks relevant experience OR Option 2: 12 months' experience in a learning environment.
Core Knowledge: Health and safety, child development, safeguarding.
Skills: Planning, teamwork, communication, flexibility, motivation.
Core Behaviours: Relationship building, empathy, confidentiality.
SECTION 2 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA
May be considered to refine the candidate pool.
Qualifications: Additional relevant training, higher qualifications, language skills.
Experience: Additional experience with SEND, working with specific needs, digital tech skills.
