DVLA offers an exciting opportunity for a Data Engineer to help design, build, and operate modern cloud-based data platforms and products that enable smarter decision-making. We are seeking technically skilled data enthusiasts from backgrounds such as Data Engineering, Software Development, Analysis, or Data Science, who are passionate about building high-quality, maintainable data services. The salary ranges from £42,848 to £57,400, plus excellent Civil Service benefits and over 28% pension contributions. Flexible, hybrid working from Swansea is available.


About the role

As Data Engineers at DVLA, we are part of the Government Digital and Data function, leading digital transformation of government services affecting most of the UK population.

Data Engineers develop and operate data platforms and products to support the agency's services and data-driven decision-making.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will develop and maintain our data platform and products using the latest cloud technologies, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices. You will support and mentor other team members and contribute to delivering high-quality, accurate data products.

Key responsibilities

* Design and lead on data flow implementation connecting operational systems, analytics, and BI systems
* Identify opportunities to reuse existing data flows
* Lead the build of data streaming systems
* Optimize code for performance
* Manage databases
* Operate production data services


About you

We welcome applications from individuals with relevant technical skills, including backgrounds in data or software engineering, analysis, or data science. You should have a strong technical understanding and interest in engineering reliable data products.

Technologies you should be familiar with include:

* Python & SQL
* Testing

You should have programming and build skills to deliver reliable solutions to business problems, and be capable of integrating multiple data sources into cohesive datasets or models. During the interview, you will work with a Python and SQL project, with access to online resources, to demonstrate your problem-solving approach.
