Job overview

The Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist will work as a member of the wider locality based multidisciplinary Manchester Macmillan Supportive and Palliative Care Service. The post holder will support Neighborhood teams to deliver locally driven high quality care, responsive to patient and carers needs. This includes education of other health care professionals, training, support and advice for the multidisciplinary team.

The focus of the multidisciplinary approach will be to support patients and carers to live well, prevent inappropriate hospital admission and meet their preferred priorities for care.


Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has now arisen within the City Wide Manchester Macmillan Palliative Support Service for a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care. The post holder will work as part of the Macmillan Specialist multi-disciplinary team comprising of Medics, Dietitian, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Nurses, Speech and Language Therapist, Assistant Practitioners, Admin support and Volunteer Coordinators. The team aims to provide effective support palliative care and/or rehabilitation to patients with a life limiting condition requiring palliative intervention.

The post holder will provide supportive palliative care to enhance the quality of life for patients/carers with any life limiting illness requiring palliative care, including complex physical, psychological and emotional needs. The post holder will be expected to have extensive palliative medication knowledge to support the complex symptom management needs of the patient.

Recent investment by Macmillan has enabled the Manchester Macmillan Supportive and Palliative Care Service to develop substantially for the city of Manchester; this is an exciting time to join our innovative and expanding team.

Person specification


Supportive & Palliative Care

* Up to date registration with the NMC
* Health Related Degree or equivalent portfolio experience
* Experience evidenced by completion of highly specialist short courses, post-graduate training, etc or relevant Master’s degree
* Non-medical Prescribing qualification or ability to work towards V300
* Substantial experience in specialist field of cancer/palliative care
* Experience of working collaboratively
* Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
* Experience of working in a community setting
* Experience of teaching training others at a specialist level
* Experience of supporting and supervising other staff in the clinical environment
* Highly specialist knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools relevant to cancer/palliative care.
* Advanced communication skills or willing to undertake 3 day National Advanced Communication Skills training
* In depth knowledge of National Policies and Procedures (relevant to the specialist client group)
* Car Driver with access to a car
* Ability to assume leadership responsibilities
* Ability to work flexibly over 7 days
* Member of relevant special interest group
* Completion of basic leadership course
* Post graduate courses in cancer/palliative care
* Experience of managing resources
* Evidence of contribution to the developments of services
* Experience of working in an inner city multi-ethnic environment
