Inpatient and Hospice at Home Manager
Hours: 37.5 per week. Salary: £51,994 per annum (including on call allowance and 7 day working).
Thank you for your interest in the position. This role is for the Inpatient Unit & Hospice at Home team at Pendleside Hospice, overseeing care in patients' homes and the inpatient unit.
Services: Inpatient Unit and Hospice at Home provide 24-hour palliative and end-of-life care, with teams of registered Nurses and Healthcare Assistants. Patients are referred for symptom management, rehabilitation or end of life care, with a mix of discharge back home or to a long-term care setting. The Hospice at Home service covers care in patients’ homes and care homes.
Role purpose: Lead and manage the IPU and Hospice at Home services; deliver holistic, evidence-based palliative care; network with community groups to promote Hospice services and collaborate on new initiatives.
Main responsibilities
* To have 24 hour, overall responsibility for the management, leadership and co-ordination of the Inpatient Unit and Hospice at Home Service
* To ensure high quality, evidence-based specialist palliative care is delivered to patients and their families with care, compassion and dignity
* To ensure that services and outcomes are monitored and delivered safely and efficiently by a well-trained workforce
* To contribute towards service development across the organisation
* To provide out of hours management on call cover
Core tasks
Clinical
* Manage the department's delivery of clinical care and associated activities in line with appropriate standards and guidelines
* Oversee, plan and conduct holistic clinical assessments on newly admitted/referred patients and ensure care plans are clearly recorded and documented
* Ensure medicines are managed in accordance with internal policies and regulatory requirements
* Promote evidence-based practice to maximise patients' quality of life
* Participate in daily handovers, referrals meetings and weekly Multi Disciplinary Team meetings
* Ensure all staff and volunteers adhere to infection control policies and measures
* Facilitate informed consent enabling patient choice
* Manage patient throughput to maximise bed availability and equitable access to services
* Ensure patient electronic records and documentation are accurate and compliant with guidelines
Management and Leadership
* Plan, coordinate, direct and manage IPU and Hospice at Home teams and resources to achieve strategic objectives
* Collaborate with the Senior Management Team to ensure high levels of service and care
* Develop operational policies, procedures and clinical guidelines; implement, review and monitor
* Foster effective communication within teams and with external stakeholders
* Promote sustainability through integrated team working across departments
* Ensure department cleanliness and liaise with domestic team to minimise infections
* Provide inspirational leadership and empower staff to lead on projects and innovation
* Develop and review regular performance measures and use data for service improvement
* Oversee HR procedures including recruitment, sickness absence, and performance management; provide out of hours management on call cover
Communication Skills
* Foster relationships across multidisciplinary teams and external professionals
* Act as clinical knowledge resource for Hospice staff and external agencies
* Provide clear reports on patient progress; communicate sensitively with distressed or bereaved individuals
* Manage complaints following Hospice policies; ensure accurate documentation
* Maintain confidentiality and professional communication standards

* Maintain and update own clinical skills; ensure mandatory training and competency assessments
* Monitor mandatory training, appraisal and supervision; encourage ongoing professional development
* Support staff and students; ensure NMC revalidation requirements are fulfilled

* Encourage prompt reporting of incidents; participate in investigations and root cause analysis as required
* Contribute to audit programmes and safeguarding compliance
* Maintain medicines and equipment management in line with policies
Health, Safety and Governance
* Promote infection prevention, complete risk assessments, and update risk registers
* Lead safeguarding, MCA/DoLS compliance
* Ensure safe staffing and duty rosters; governance of electronic records and information sharing
* Ensure compliance with Health and Social Care Act regulations and overall service delivery monitoring

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Essential: Registered General Nurse (NMC), current registration
* Essential: Degree or equivalent experience; recent CPD
* Essential: Management/leadership qualification; mentoring qualification
* Desirable: Formal qualification in palliative care
Experience
* Essential: Senior level leadership of healthcare teams; experience in palliative care services
* Essential: Knowledge of CQC requirements for hospice environments; staff appraisals; mentoring students
* Desirable: Experience with life-limiting conditions; cross-organisational work; patient records; budgeting
Health and practical
* Essential: Good health and ability to move and handle people/equipment
* Essential: Full UK driving licence and own transport
* Desirable: Clinical audit and presentation skills
