Community Maternity Support Worker

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated experienced Maternity Support Worker to support the community midwives based at Oxford Road Campus. The post involves assisting the midwives caring for women and birthing people during the antenatal and postnatal period with supervision from the midwives. You will be required to support parents to care for and feed their babies, also undertaking parent education.


Main duties of the job

You will be required to perform blood tests and observations on both mothers and babies.

You will also be expected to support the Midwives with administration eg: ordering blood tests and booking appointments.The role will also include cleaning and maintaining the environment, restocking equipment, utilising IT systems and support families in the community setting with a focus being on public health promotion.You will have excellent interpersonal skills as you will be communicating with women on the phone and working closely with the women and their families in their homes.

Candidates should expect to work shifts to cover days, weekends and public holidays. The Roster is planned to ensure fairness and to accommodate family commitments whenever possible.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Completed the National Care Certificate
* Holds a level 3 Vocational Qualification (e.g. NVQ or Apprenticeship) in Maternity Support or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and/or experience.
* Holds Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English or GCSE equivalent or undertake and achieve a pass following completion of level 1 functional skills assessment
* Worked at a Band 3 Nursing Assistant level or equivalent
* Speciality specific training and evidence of competencies being achieved and continued development


Knowledge

* Experience working in a maternity setting, undertaking a wide range of clinical commitments.
* Knowledge of Infection Control & Safeguarding processes
* Experience of working with the multidisciplinary team.
* Experience of caring for a group of patients
* Experience of dealing with patient/relative complaints as appropriate.
* Experience in supporting Quality Improvement audits and research and development activities
* Experience of working in more than one speciality within a health care environment.


Skills

* Taking and recording vital signs and other clinical skill following appropriate training and assessment and within scope of job role
* Good communication skills (written and verbal).
* Able to work as a team.
* Able to carry out routine and non-routine tasks.
* Able to work on own initiative in delivery patient care, following direction by a Registered Midwife.
* Able to relate well with patients/relatives/visitors/ Colleagues/the multi-disciplinary team and wider Trust staff
* Must hold a UK driving license, be able to drive and have access to a car for daily work
* Expanded scope of skills within maternity or health setting
* Experience of inducting, coaching and supervising junior staff
