Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust is a large teaching hospital, boasting over 25,500 surgeries performed annually. We are located on the northeast edge of London and on the borders of rural Essex, making us a bustling hub with a hugely diverse population. Our position offers the perfect balance of access to London via the Elizabeth Line (trains into London every 10 minutes) and the Essex countryside, which is only a 20-minute drive away. The Mayor's London Plan 2021 identified Romford as one of the capital's Opportunity Areas, with potential for large-scale development including new homes, jobs, and infrastructure. This programme needs to be paired with a healthcare team equally as ambitious. We are a growing Trust, and the first in London to be accredited as one of only eight recognised surgical hubs across the UK. This means that we meet the highest standards in clinical and operational practice and are committed to delivering faster access to some of the most common surgical procedures.
Main duties of the job
Our elective hub at King George Hospital exclusively performs planned surgery and has ring-fenced inpatient and critical care beds, ensuring we can operate 52 weeks of the year with minimal disruption to our elective programme. The department has two Da Vinci robots and a Mako robot for Orthopaedic surgery. Our Queen's site is a neurosurgical centre, undertaking predominantly day case elective surgery, and is our hot site for CEPOD and trauma. As a result of the innovative projects we have undertaken, our elective hub has been nominated for, and won, several HSJ Awards.
We are looking for highly skilled Consultants in Anaesthesia who want to join our forward-thinking team and make a real difference in the NHS. We offer a supportive and stimulating environment where you can develop your skills and career. Our Trust is also an ideal place to prepare staff for future roles by giving them the experience needed to pursue a successful career in Anaesthetics.
About us
We are an organisation committed to continuous improvement, driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and that our patients are satisfied with. We are no longer in special measures; we have opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH). Our Chief Executive, Matthew Trainer, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.
We operate from two main sites - KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with over 330,000 visitors last year. We are campaigning to secure the £35m needed to transform the A&E at Queen's and eliminate corridor care.
Our patients benefit from our Women's Health Hub in Ilford, an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch, and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing an extra 94,000 scans annually.
The majority of our 8,000 staff, from 146 different countries and diverse backgrounds, live within the three London boroughs we serve. Many work flexibly, and over 400 are enrolled in our Ofsted-accredited apprenticeship programmes. We are proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We are excited to introduce an electronic patient record system that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
