The University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint an Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry or a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry within the newly established Intellectual Disabilities Research Institute (IDRIS) in collaboration with Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust where the successful candidate will undertake clinical duties. The university, founded in 1900 when Queen Victoria granted our Royal Charter, has always adopted an ambitious and progressive approach to education and research. We are proud to have fostered a global community of leaders and problem-solvers.

IDRIS is based within the School of Social Policy and Society, includes researchers in the School of Psychology and across other Colleges of the University, and was established as part of the 125th anniversary of the University of Birmingham. Staff within IDRIS have a reputation for undertaking complex clinical studies of health and social care interventions and educational research with children, adolescents, and adults with intellectual disabilities. We are a new research Institute, and we aim to be one of the most productive research groups internationally, and the leading research group in the United Kingdom in applied research involving people with intellectual disabilities. IDRIS is the home of some of the world’s most highly cited researchers working with people with intellectual disabilities. The successful applicant will join a growing research team comprised currently of five professors, three associate professors, four assistant professors, and more than 20 research staff and PhD students. Several existing senior staff undertake clinical duties within the NHS.

The successful postholder will undertake clinical work within Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust as an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist. The clinical component of the role will ideally align with the candidate’s research interests and will include three days per week of clinical work within a community learning disabilities team. As such, the postholder must have full registration with the GMC and a license to practice and hold a Certificate of Completion of Training in the Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities or already be included on the specialist register.

Responsibilities

* Clinical duties within Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust as an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist.
* Conducting clinical work three days per week with a community learning disabilities team.
* Academic leadership, research, and education that complements the institute’s priorities.
* Developing and leading multidisciplinary teams.
* Acting as a role model for academic citizenship and fostering an inclusive research culture.

Qualifications

* Full registration with the GMC.
* License to practice and a Certificate of Completion of Training in the Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities, or already included on the specialist register.
* Track record of academic achievement appropriate to the grade of appointment.
* Experience in leading and developing multidisciplinary teams (desirable).
* Research and education expertise aligned with the institute’s strengths.

For informal enquiries about the role, or the support available to the successful candidate, applicants are encouraged to contact Professor Peter Langdon (P.Langdon@bham.ac.uk) or Professor Richard Hastings (R.Hastings@bham.ac.uk).
