Responsibilities
Job Summary
The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests, analyzes results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan, which may include administering medication, starting, maintaining, and discontinuing IV lines, administering therapies, observing and recording patient status, and consulting with physicians and healthcare clinicians.
The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post-treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self-administration of medications. The RN provides direction to LPNs and nursing aides, supports clinical knowledge and skills development, precepts new staff and students, and continually enhances their nursing practice and knowledge.
All RN staff responsible for stroke patients must have knowledge of:
• Stroke symptoms and warning signs
• Protocols and pathways for stroke management
• NIHSS
• Stroke Alert activation and protocol
• Stroke quality indicators
• Educational materials and community resources
• Educational requirements
• Stroke Center website resources
* Possess systematic health data collection skills, involving family, and analyze assessment data to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise family-centered, developmentally and culturally appropriate care plans.
* Identify expected outcomes tailored to patients' specific health problems and develop evidence-based, family-centered care plans.
* Implement interventions, including treatments, medications, emergency measures, and resuscitative efforts, based on policies and procedures, addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural needs.
* Evaluate patient progress, document observations and interventions, and ensure high-quality, cost-effective healthcare outcomes.
* Continuously evaluate and improve personal nursing practice, adhering to standards, statutes, and regulations.
* Integrate ethical principles and enhance cultural competence.
* Collaborate in professional development, mentoring, and fostering a positive practice environment.
* Work with multidisciplinary teams, patients, and families to assess, plan, and evaluate care.
* Develop, evaluate, and improve standards of care based on evidence and research, and facilitate practice changes.
* Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency in patient care planning and delivery.
Qualifications
Education
Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing. All staff responsible for stroke patients must complete specific education prior to start. All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 10 years of RN experience. Graduation from an NLN/CCNE-accredited institution required.
Experience
Minimum 1 year RN experience required for all float positions.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid RN license in Arizona or a Compact State, upon hire. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, along with any unit-specific certifications mandated by the specialty area.
