Job Description
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Nuclear Applications
Location: Bath, UK
A globally recognised engineering business based in Bath, known for delivering precision control and actuation solutions into critical infrastructure markets, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer with proven nuclear industry experience.
Their technology operates in some of the world’s most demanding environments, where safety, compliance and performance are absolute. This role sits at the centre of that challenge.
The Role
They will take a senior technical position within a high-performing engineering team, leading the design and development of products for nuclear applications. This is hands-on engineering at a high level - owning complex design work, influencing project direction, ensuring regulatory compliance and driving engineering excellence across the full product lifecycle. From concept and research through to detailed design, validation and final manufacture, they will play a pivotal role in delivering robust, compliant and high-integrity engineered solutions. There is no direct line management - but strong technical leadership, accountability and mentorship are essential.
What They’ll Be Doing
Engineering & Technical Authority
* Lead mechanical design activities for nuclear-qualified products
* Own key elements of project delivery, influencing timescales and technical direction
* Conduct and lead rigorous design reviews to ensure compliance with nuclear standards and specifications
* Design and develop components including castings, gearing systems, electric motors and sealing solutions
* Produce and review detailed 3D CAD models and technical drawings
* Develop verification & validation strategies, including functional and non-functional testing
* Generate high-quality technical documentation to demonstrate compliance and traceability
* Present technical solutions and analysis to senior stakeholders and customers
Nuclear Standards & Compliance
They will bring strong working knowledge of:
* 10CFR Part 50 Appendix B and Part 21 reporting
* CSA N299 series standards
* IEEE Nuclear Standards (382, 323, 383, 344)
* Design for internationally regulated nuclear environments
Technical Leadership
* Act as a role model for engineering best practice
* Provide informal mentoring and share knowledge across the team
* Drive adherence to structured design methodologies
* Contribute to continuous improvement across processes and product development
What They’ll Bring
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Industrial Engineering or equivalent
* Proven experience designing products for the nuclear power industry (essential)
* Strong background in industrial mechanical design and product enhancement
* Experience with structured design techniques and full lifecycle development
* Familiarity with verification & validation tools, requirements capture and defect management
* Confident using CAD and Microsoft-based technical documentation tools
* Willingness to travel when required
Why This Role Is Exciting
* Engineering for environments where failure is not an option
* Direct influence on products used in nuclear power facilities globally
* High technical ownership without stepping away from hands-on design
* Complex, standards-driven engineering that challenges and stretches capability
* A senior role where credibility, accountability and expertise truly matter
For a Senior Engineer who thrives on precision, regulatory depth and technically demanding design work, this is an opportunity to operate at the sharp end of mechanical engineering in one of the UK’s strongest engineering hubs.
