Overview

The role of the Nursing Associate is to work with the multi professional team and the Registered Nurse to assess, plan, organise and deliver clinical care in line with service and patient needs, as agreed with supervising clinicians. Providing care across our special schools, the post holder will be responsible for the administration of nasogastric/gastrostomy feeds, the administration of medications, medical interventions including suctioning and seizure management.

The Nursing Associate will work as a member of the Community Children’s Nursing service to provide an effective, evidence-based service to children and young people with additional needs, disabilities, long term conditions, life limiting and life threatening conditions, and their families in Walsall special schools. The nursing associate has a breadth of knowledge across the lifespan and across the fields of nursing, providing holistic and person centred care and support for children and in a variety of settings. The nursing associate works independently under the leadership of registered nurses, working within the sphere of nursing care and within all aspects of the nursing process.

Nursing associates are equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours relevant to employment as a nursing associate and will work to a nationally recognised Nursing and Midwifery Councils code of conduct and must meet the NMC standards of proficiency.


Responsibilities

* Demonstrate the proficiency to administer medications/feeds.
* Attend all mandatory training relevant to the role.
* Adhere to Trust Policies relating to the control and administration of drugs.
* Ensure high standards of nursing care are given and maintained, and act when standards are not being maintained.
* Work within the NMC code of professional practice and within policies, procedures and guidelines of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.
* Be flexible to work within areas or departments to meet changing service needs.
* Provide coaching and support to newly qualified staff and students, new starters and Trainee Nursing Associates to encourage an effective learning environment.
* Provide support and supervision to Health care support workers/Assistant Practitioner to promote their learning and development within the role.
* Receive delegated duties from the supervising RN and senior colleagues, accepting those that fall within individual competency levels, adhering to the NMC Delegation and Accountability tool.
* Recognise and work within the limits of own competence.
* Take responsibility for continuing professional development and performance, including identifying development needs and maintaining a portfolio in accordance with re-registration requirements.


Clinical duties and practice

* Work as part of a designated clinical and care team delivering care to children and young people with additional needs, disabilities, long term conditions, life limiting and life threatening conditions, and their families in Walsall special schools.
* Participate in the care of named children, meet their physical and emotional needs, and undertake delivery of care plans.
* Provide support and guidance to parents in the delivery of planned care.
* Work in partnership with parents and appropriate agencies to ensure delivery of care for their child.
* Develop understanding of all elements of the nursing process and assist the registered nurse in ongoing assessment, planning, management and evaluation of care.
* Recognise changes in a patient’s condition requiring intervention and know when to refer to the supervising registered nurse or paediatric Community consultant and other senior colleagues for reassessment of patient care.
* Perform procedures as detailed within the NMC Standards for Proficiency for Nurse Associate, meet nursing needs of patients in their care, and work within the NMC code of professional practice and trust policies.
* Maintain willingness to undertake additional skills and training as department requirements evolve.
