About the Job
Google's Hardware Operations team monitors the infrastructure behind Google's search technology. As an Operations Technician, you’ll install, configure, test, troubleshoot and maintain hardware (servers and components) and server software (Google’s Linux cluster). You’ll handle more complex components such as networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches, and networking protocols. You’ll participate or lead small project teams on larger installations and develop contingency plans. A typical day involves manual movement and installation of racks; physically demanding but rewarding.
Responsibilities
* Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across projects or functions.
* Report issues and follow data center procedures to troubleshoot and diagnose straightforward equipment or infrastructure problems as they arise, and apply needed resources for resolution.
* Maintain security and integrity of data, track media to ensure proper data security, in accordance with Google security standards.
* Disassemble specific equipment that has reached end‑of‑life via part replacement or maintenance in a team setting.
* Repair, fix, and conduct preventative maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, or infrastructure based on identified issues with defined solutions and limited guidance.
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
* Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols.
* Experience performing component‑level repairs on IT equipment.
* Ability to lift/move 50lb (23kg) equipment and exert physical effort over extended periods, including bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling, and lifting.
* Ability to work non‑standard hours, including weekends, night shifts, holidays, and shift‑based schedules as required.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with server hardware maintenance/repair and troubleshooting/diagnosing.
* Knowledge of networking, including basic topology and protocol understanding.
* Excellent Linux skills, including installation, systems administration, and troubleshooting.
* Ability to communicate fluently in English, to support client relationship management in this region.
