Job Description:
Brief Description
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. This is a critical part of the work we do, which involves the daily upkeep of the rail network.
As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviours; if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.
This is an electrical-based role requiring applicants to be qualified in electrical installation at a minimum of NVQ level 2, with NVQ level 3 preferred.
Competence may be awarded at Level 2 if the individual has achieved:
* C&G 2382 and C&G 2365, or
* An advanced apprenticeship in railway engineering with an electrical E&P bias, or
* Equivalent courses, such as those from armed services, or
* Previous electrical industry experience verified by the Route Head of Asset [E&P] or delegated authority.
About the role (External)
Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and operatives, specializing in:
Distribution and Plant - Working with distribution and plant equipment vital for powering the railway. You’ll develop a broad range of technical skills across manual, electrical, and digital equipment.
Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, often performing manual work and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, rule adherence, and teamwork are critical, especially near moving trains at high speed.
You matter to your team
You should be a natural team player, capable of leading when asked. Use your skills to deliver work safely, ensure team competence, and role model safe working behaviors, challenging risks to safety to ensure everyone returns home safely.
Today’s technicians can progress to become tomorrow’s team leaders.
We value transferable skills such as:
* Leadership – motivating and directing teams for safe, efficient work.
* Effective communication – delivering clear instructions.
* Technical skills – inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques.
* Safety – modeling safe behaviors and implementing safe systems of work.
* Problem-solving – finding safe, effective solutions and staying updated on standards and procedures.
* Willingness to learn – continuously developing relevant skills and knowledge.
* Qualifications – ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline, or equivalent experience.
Additional considerations
* Shift work including days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
* Employment is subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical, BPSS checks, hearing, and eyesight examinations.
* Must hold a valid driving license (category B) and be within a 60-minute commute of the location.
We support your development
We provide comprehensive training to develop technical and non-technical skills. Transitioning from another industry is supported with structured training, and career progression opportunities are clear, with technicians able to advance to team leaders.
Benefits include:
* Privileged staff travel with discounts.
* Subsidized rail and underground season tickets.
* Healthcare, cycle schemes, discounts, and family-friendly benefits.
* Flexible working hours, work-life balance, and paid leave for volunteering and reserve service.
