Clinical Fellow in Critical Care Medicine

The closing date is 30 April 2026

This whole‑time NHS vacancy is for a Clinical Fellow whose principal duties will run from 5 August 2026 to 2 February in the Critical Care Unit at University Hospital Aintree.

The post is suitable for an individual with previous anaesthetic and intensive care experience who wishes to gain further experience managing a diverse range of critically ill patients with a view to progressing to specialty training in Anaesthesia or Intensive Care Medicine.

The successful applicant will work under Consultant supervision at a level best matched to their learning needs and experience. They will become part of a dynamic team dedicated to delivering high‑quality patient care, with opportunities for teaching, clinical governance, research and quality improvement to strengthen portfolios for future training posts.

This is a whole‑time post covered by the Medical and Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of Service. Study leave and other educational activities are also allocated. Please note that this vacancy may close early if sufficient applications are received.

Applicants should have completed Core Anaesthetic Training or equivalent, hold full GMC registration and be eligible to work in the UK.


Main duties of the job

The post is appointed initially for six months, with extension beyond six months negotiable while in post. The successful applicant will work an EWTD‑compliant full‑shift rota. Salary will be dependent on the salary scale and subject to additional allowances based on rota intensity.

Study leave is granted by approval of the trainee‑rota coordinator in accordance with Trust policy.

Registered practitioners have a responsibility to:

* Maintain current active professional registration
* Act in accordance with their professional Code of Conduct and guiding documents
* Adhere to Trust policy and procedure
* Keep skills, knowledge and awareness of professional issues up to date
* Maintain a professional portfolio

This post is not recognized for training by the postgraduate dean and will not count towards a certificate of completion of training.


Job responsibilities

Clinical

The successful candidate will:

* Share responsibility for the assessment, resuscitation and treatment of all patients referred to the Critical Care Unit, working as part of a team with the on‑call ICU consultant.
* Attend patients in the Emergency Department, theatre recovery and wards following referral from colleagues in other specialties.
* Work alongside trainees on a full‑shift rota, remaining resident in the hospital during working hours allocated on the rota.
* Be part of the medical emergency team.
* Ensure continued medical education as agreed at Directorate level.
* Provide direct clinical supervision and teaching of trainee staff, nurses and medical students.
* Assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective and efficient critical care service and support the Trust in delivering optimal patient care.
* Carry out all duties at the highest possible standard and take responsibility for individual patient care.
* Comply with Trust health and safety policies and adopt basic infection control principles to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
* Maintain accurate clinical records and effective working relationships with medical, nursing and allied health professionals on the critical care team.
* Take an active role in departmental clinical governance activity.
* Prioritize duties of the post at all times.
* Participate in an active audit programme; departmental weekly educational meetings, audit meetings and M&M meetings are held regularly.
* Utilise hospital and departmental libraries, including IT facilities.

There are no formal teaching, administrative or research responsibilities with this post.


Person Specification – Qualifications

* Registered with the GMC
* MB ChB or equivalent
* Primary FRCA or equivalent postgraduate qualification
* Certificate of Advanced Life Support (or other accredited life support course)


Experience

* Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
* Evidence that current achievement and performance is commensurate with the period of training
* Three months experience in ICM (can be within core training program)
* Twenty‑four months core anaesthesia training (or equivalent) by the time of starting post
* Evidence of sufficient UK experience to participate on senior airway rota
* Twelve months post‑registration experience in the UK
* Involvement in teaching
* Six months experience in acute medicine/emergency medicine


Knowledge

* Attendance at meetings or courses related to ICM
* Presentations related to ICM


Skills

* Competence in simple clinical tasks (e.g., examination, cannulation, venepuncture)
* Competence in procedures enabling organ support (intubation, ultrasound‑guided central venous catheter placement)
* Success as a team worker sensitive to needs of colleagues and patients
* Intra‑ and inter‑hospital transfer experience
* Competence in practical procedures such as intercostal drain insertion, bronchoscopy, echocardiography, FUSIC


Other

* Eligible to work in the UK and able to commence work on 5 August 2026
* Attitudes consistent with GMC guidelines and Trust values
* Non‑medical interests and activities for balance
* Membership of professional bodies relating to ICM
