Job Overview

As a Health Care Support Worker in this clinical area, you will be taking care of patients undergoing chemotherapy, managing side effects, and supporting patients with haematological emergencies and palliative care.


Part‑time Position

This vacancy is for a Part Time, 23 hours per week position. The care you give to patients will be compassionate, caring, and high quality. You will recognise your abilities and limitations and only carry out tasks for which you are trained. As a member of the ward team you will support the other staff, act in the best interest of patients, and treat everyone with respect. As a Trust employee you will honour your work commitments, be reliable, trustworthy, and uphold the values and beliefs of the Trust and the Skills for Health Code of Conduct.

Please note this is a front facing role where a high level of spoken and written English language is required and do not use AI software for completion of your application for this role.


Main Duties of the Job

* Assist members of the multi‑disciplinary team to maintain patients’ fundamental needs and ensure patient safety.
* Assist with a range of non‑clinical duties.
* Work under the supervision of registered staff and Healthcare Assistants and provide support in the delivery of quality care for patients.
* Provide a full range of support functions in a ward/department/theatre or clinical environment, including personal care duties for patients, supporting patients/clients with toileting, bathing, dressing and meals.
* Ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients and always work in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person‑centred care principles.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* Provide excellent customer care skills to ensure patients come first.
* Act as an advocate for patients within the department/ward/unit.
* Act on own initiative when delivering the personal care requirements and seek guidance of a Healthcare Assistant or Registrant where required.
* Ensure that patients’ receive high quality communication and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs, or principles.
* Assist the Registered Nurse and Care Assistants with end‑of‑life care and deceased patient last offices.
* Assist patients to the toilet and give bedpans and commodes as needed.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Evidence of general education
* Willingness to work towards and complete the Healthcare Support Worker level 2 apprenticeship


Desirable Qualifications

* Knowledge of personal care and related procedures
* Vocational qualification at level 2 or equivalent relevant experience


Experience

* Previous work experience which includes team working, communicating with staff and colleagues, and understanding of work practices.


Desirable Experience

* Experience of working in a health care environment.
* Experience of dealing with the public.


Skills and Knowledge

* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
* Ability to learn new skills.
* Knowledge of how to respect individuality and diversity of patients, their carers, and your colleagues.
* Good Customer care skills.
* Basic numeracy skills.
* Ability for caring for people with compassion.
* Clear and accurate written/verbal English.
* Good basic hygiene skills (e.g., food handling, hand washing etc.).
* Punctual and reliable.
* Understanding of the requirements of patient confidentiality.
* Ability to work within a team.
* Ability to follow a clear instruction and accept constructive professional feedback.
* Basic IT skills.


Desirable Skills and Knowledge

* Experience with Electronic Medical Records.


Special Requirements

* Able and willing to work flexible shift patterns, internal rotation from day and night duty and unsocial hours (where applicable) according to service needs employed within.


Desirable Special Requirements

* Can work with other departments as required.
