Internal Redeployment Only - Digital Illustrations and Applications Officer School of History, Archaeology and Religion An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Digital Illustrations and Applications Officer to join the School of History, Archaeology and Religion. To support the University in relation to research support by appointing a Digital Illustrations and Applications Officer in the School of History, Archaeology and Religion. This role will carry out illustration work for colleagues bringing research to publication. The role will also provide advice, guidance and support around the panning of illustration work for future projects and in relation to grant applications. The role will also provide support for the teaching of illustration as part of degree programmes. Cardiff University is seeking to appoint a Digital Illustrations and Applications Officer in the School of History, Archaeology and Religion. It is a fantastic opportunity work on archaeological illustrations, specifically produce digitised maps, plans, section and graphical information and hand-draw archaeological artefacts for reports and publications, using appropriate specialist software. The role will also involve producing publishable distribution maps from GIS-generated images as well as advising members of staff on book designs, layouts, poster illustrations, and brochures etc for publication. Part of the role will also provide support and guidance to staff and students (UG, PGT and PGR) on the use of relevant software, graphics packages, and equipment. This post is full-time (35 hours per week), is open-ended and is immediately available. Duties and Responsibilities Key Duties Provide professional advice and guidance on digital imaging processes and procedures to internal and external customers, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood. Produce digitised maps, plans, sections, and graphical information, and hand-draw archaeological artefacts for reports and publication, using appropriate specialist software (including Creative Cloud and CAD programmes). Produce distribution maps and similar for publication, using GIS software, evaluating datasets and selecting appropriate spatial analytical techniques to meet project needs. Advise staff on book designs, layouts, poster illustrations, and brochures etc for publication, proactively identifying design solutions Advise internal and external customers on needs and costs for illustration and design (e.g. for funding applications). Provide high quality design services which successfully support the needs of customers in terms of impact, creativity, and functionality. Provide support and guidance to staff and students (UG, PGT, and PGR) on the use of relevant software, graphics packages, and equipment Provide specialist support and guidance for UG and PGT modules, e.g. those focusing on illustration, visual analysis, and GIS. Collaborate with others in order to make recommendations for developments of established processes and procedures Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required Create specific working groups from colleagues across the University to achieve agreed objectives Supervise specific project teams on an occasional basis to accomplish key objectives Develop and deliver training within digital imagery and associated specialist software/applications. Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department. Instruct and guide other employees across the University within the use of specialist software and applications as required. Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/ experience in a relevant field. Knowledge, Skills and Experience 2. Substantial experience of working within archaeological illustration, including digital and hand-drawn illustration of archaeological materials and artefacts for publication. 3. Substantial experience of using appropriate specialist design and illustration software/applications (including Creative Cloud) to produce high quality artwork, and evidence of the ability to train others in their use. 4. Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within design and illustration to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers. Customer Service, Communication and Team Working 5. Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people 6. Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered Planning, Analysis and Problem solving 7. Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems with range of potential outcomes 8. Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline 9. Evidence of ability to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning and setting priorities for own work and that of others and monitoring progress. Other 10. Desirable Criteria Experience of producing high quality distribution maps using GIS, and evidence of the ability to train others in its use.
