BAM UK & Ireland is recruiting a Design Manager to join the Northern Construction region, based in Manchester. Reporting to the Regional Design Manager, you will oversee the design management discipline, digital discipline, and establish and monitor robust strategies for new opportunities during pre-construction.
Making Possible
* Demonstrate design leadership qualities to encourage effective design team and construction team coordination and collaborative working to meet the project goal.
* Demonstrate capability to manage a large complex project or a number of smaller projects with a team.
* Embrace Digital Construction to enable a digital build-before-we-build team approach.
* Understand the project requirements including client brief & business processes, and employer requirements.
* Embrace and promote the use of DFMA and MMC where appropriate.
* Identify, manage and mitigate design risks as part of the team.
* Identify opportunities to improve the design by considering how to improve safety, incorporate buildability, improve quality, reduce defects, and provide best‑value compliant solutions.
* Work with the tender team to develop the contractor's proposals document.
* Report to the Project Manager and Regional Design Manager, taking responsibility for the management of the design through pre‑construction and construction stages in line with company procedures; including managing the design development process and the interface with specialist sub‑contract design.
* Ensure design is developed in line with the most commercially advantageous position whilst meeting strategic objectives and contract requirements.
* Prepare and reach agreement to the Design Management Plan and assist in the production of the BIM Execution Plan.
* Lead/ provide input into the TIDP and monitor performance against these.
* In conjunction with the project team, develop and reach agreement on the design programme and information deliverables, ensuring this is fully coordinated with the project procurement and construction programmes. Pro‑actively manage RFIs.
* Review safety risks checking they are identified, eliminated, reduced or controlled in line with CDM requirements. Ensure designers are carrying out their duties, and where required, support the role of Principal Designer in line with current CDM (2015).
* Co‑ordinate the whole design process, managing change, and working closely with the client, employer’s representatives, design team and legislative bodies.
* Organise and chair design coordination and design progress meetings with the design team and sub‑contractors and ensure that design risk assessments are produced. Prepare minutes, notes and reports as required to ensure effective communication and accurate records are maintained.
* Manage the document control process, supported by a document controller.
* Maintain a professional approach with clients and their professional teams, sub‑contractors and suppliers.

The role will report into the Regional Design Manager and will oversee a project within the region, alongside pre‑construction of upcoming projects.

* An understanding of both the design and construction processes, and the interface between them
* GCSEs + HNC in Building Studies, degree in Design Management or Architecture
* Enthusiastic team player, able to listen, understand, engage and motivate, and with confidence to make decisions when required
* A desire to constantly learn, improve and share knowledge and experience
* Desire to drive improvements and benefits through embracing digital construction
* Excellent communication skills, both at the personal level and more formal reporting level
