NRL are supporting a Teesside based engineering company who now require an EC&I Systems Engineer (Mid-Level) to join their team on a permanent basis.
Location: Middlesbrough (office/site based, with UK travel)
The Opportunity
We are hiring a mid-tier EC&I engineer (circa 5 – 10+ years of relevant experience) with a strong bias toward control, automation and systems engineering.
You will be required to work autonomously across the full project lifecycle – requirements, design, configuration, testing and commissioning – while coordinating closely with colleagues and clients.
Key Responsibilities
* Own and deliver control/automation work packages from concept through FAT/SAT and site commissioning, ensuring safety, quality and schedule adherence.
* Produce and maintain URS, FDS/SDS, cause & effect, I/O lists, P&IDs mark-ups, cable schedules, loop diagrams, and test documentation.
* Configure and program PLC/DCS/SCADA systems (e.g., Siemens PCS 7 / TIA Portal, Rockwell ControlLogix/FactoryTalk, WinCC / Aveva / iFIX, etc.).
* Perform system integration, panel specification, and interface definition across electrical, instrumentation, and IT/OT networks.
* Plan and execute FAT/SAT, commissioning, loop checks and start-up activities; lead fault-finding and optimisation on client sites.
* Apply functional safety and industry standards (e.g., IEC 61511/61508, ATEX/DSEAR) and contribute to hazard reviews (HAZOP/LOPA).
* Estimate and plan tasks, provide progress reporting, manage change control, and contribute to proposals and technical sales where needed.
* Champion our “one-team” ways of working—support peers, share knowledge, and uphold our safety, quality and documentation disciplines.
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree or equivalent experience in EC&I, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Control/Automation, or related discipline.
* Approx. 5 – 10+ years in control systems design, configuration and commissioning within process industries (chemicals, energy, pharma, food, etc.).
* Hands-on experience with at least one major platform (e.g., Siemens PCS 7 / TIA Portal, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley) and modern SCADA/HMI systems.
* Solid understanding of EC&I design deliverables and lifecycle (URS/FDS/SDS, drawings, schedules, testing).
* Competence in commissioning, site acceptance testing, and start-up within live plant environments.
* Working knowledge of standards and compliance (IEC 61511/61508, ATEX/DSEAR, BS/IEC wiring standards).
* Full UK driving license and willingness to travel to client sites; comfortable with predominantly office/site-based work.
* Right to work in the UK.
Desirable
* Experience across multiple vendor platforms; networking/cybersecurity awareness in OT environments.
* Panel design/specification oversight and familiarity with EPLAN/AutoCAD.
* Exposure to functional safety lifecycle activities (SIL determination/verification).
* Familiarity with quality systems (e.g., GAMP 5 in regulated industries).
* Site safety passports (e.g., CCNSG) and contractor management experience.
Salary, Benefits & Working Pattern
* Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience and capability).
* Benefits: 8% pension, access to a pool car for business use.
* Working pattern: full-time, primarily office/site-based for team cohesion; flexible working practices available where project commitments allow.
