Associate Solicitor – Private Client

Jones Whyte is looking for an experienced Associate Solicitor to join our Private Client department, specifically within our Estate Planning team. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership qualities and bring a wealth of experience, managing a varied and often complex caseload while working closely with the responsible Partner to supervise Solicitors, Paralegals, and other team members including Trainee Solicitors.

The Role
Ross Anderson and Stephanie Hutton lead the Private Client department, which includes Associates, Senior Solicitors, Solicitors, Trainee Solicitors, accredited Paralegals, and supported by skilled Legal Assistants. With dual qualification in Scots and English law, the work served is varied and supports clients throughout Great Britain. Cross–referencing across complementary departments is encouraged to enhance client loyalty.
The role offers a partner-led team environment focused on high client satisfaction and opportunities for personal and professional development, including promotion and capability development.
This role is open to candidates who are willing to work from either Edinburgh or Glasgow.
Key Responsibilities
* Handle a large caseload with minimal supervision.
* Set up Wills, Powers of Attorney, Trusts, and Executries/Probate, advising clients in the best way for their circumstances.
* Supervise a team of fee‑earners and administrators, including delegating day‑to‑day tasks and overseeing Trainee Solicitors.
* Report to the responsible Partner and collaborate on the growth and development of the team.
* Cross‑sell other legal and non‑legal services.
* Review existing policies, practices and precedents.
* Offer technical advice, guidance and support to all staff within the department.
* Actively participate in business development opportunities and support our Partners in driving forward business growth.
Requirements
* 4 years+ PQE.
* Comprehensive technical knowledge of Wills, POAs, Trusts, Deeds of Variation, Inheritance Tax and Executries.
* Diligent, hard‑working and committed to providing clients with the best outcome.
* Adaptable to both independent work and collaborative teamwork.
* Strong organisational abilities with efficient caseload management.
* Effective interpersonal skills, communicating appropriately with clients and peers at varying seniority levels.
* Natural compassion and empathy—exemplifying kindness and care in all client interactions.
* Excellent networking capabilities.
* A “can do” attitude.
* Sound commercial and financial skills, responsible for regular billing and work in progress.
Desirable but Not Essential
* STEP Qualification.
* Dual qualification in both Scottish and English law.
