Detailed job description and main responsibilities 1. Provide High Quality Care to Patients 1.1. The postholder must be medically qualified and hold GMC specialist registration for paediatrics and preferably paediatric respiratory medicine and hold a licence to practice. 1.2. To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post. 1.3. To ensure prompt attendance at agreed Direct Clinical Care (DCC) programmed activities. 1.4. To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to response to their views. 2. Performance Management To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in: 2.1. Clinical Efficiency, for example LoS reductions, reducing DNA rates. 2.2. Quality of Outcomes, for example infection control targets. 2.3. Financial Management, for example identification, implementation and achievement of cost management programmes and participating in efforts to ensure that services are provided cost effectively. 2.4. Operational Efficiency, for example waiting list initiatives and demand management. 3. Medical Staff Management 3.1. To work with colleagues to ensure that junior doctors' hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal. 3.2. To ensure adequate systems and processes are in place to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including on-call commitments. 3.3. To participate in the recruitment of staff as and when required. 3.4. To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle. 3.5. To be responsible for the annual appraisal of doctors in training, Trust doctors, clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/General Manager. 4. Governance 4.1. To review clinical outcomes in designated areas using external benchmarking data where appropriate. 4.2. Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented. 4.3. To work closely with the Directorate, Public and Patient Involvement Panels in relation to clinical and service developments as required. 4.4. Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored. 4.5. To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis. 4.6. To keep fully informed about best practice in specialty areas and ensure implications for practice change are discussed with the Clinical Directors. 4.7. To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the team. 5. Strategy and Business Planning 5.1. To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the Directorates and Trusts where appropriate. 5.2. To represent the Trusts at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings as delegated by the Clinical Directors. 6. Leadership and Teamworking 6.1. To work collaboratively with all members of the team across both sites. 6.2. To chair regular meetings for the specialty. 6.3. To resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties. Adhere to Trust guidelines on leave, including reporting absence. Person specification Education / Qualifications Essential criteria Full GMC Registration Should be on the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT/CSER/CSER (CP) or equivalent at the time of the interview: Paediatric Medicine MRCPCH or equivalent Enhanced DBS Clearance Desirable criteria Higher Degree relevant to Paediatric Respiratory medicine Experience Essential criteria Broad general experience in paediatric respiratory medicine Demonstrate evidence of training and expertise in paediatric respiratory medicine. Experience of managing paediatric on-call provision. Valid BLS Training Valid Level 3 Safeguarding training Desirable criteria Valid APLS and NLS provider Skills and training in paediatric sleep medicine Skills / Knowledge / Abilities Essential criteria Understanding of clinical governance audit IT skills and computer literacy Knowledge of budget management Experience of managing hospital staff. Undergraduate, postgraduate and formal bedside teaching, experience in pathway redesign and improving patient treatment access times. Desirable criteria Training and experience in simulation Teaching qualification Evidence of leadership skills Values and Behaviours Essential criteria Putting patients first Responsive to, and supportive of, patients and staff Open, welcoming and honest Unfailingly kind, treating everyone with respect, compassion and dignity Determined to develop our skills and continuously improve the quality of care Teaching and Training Essential criteria Experience of teaching and training trainees, medical student, nurses and GPs Desirable criteria Experience in organising study days Experience in organisation post-graduate teaching programmes. Teaching qualifications Academic achievements including research/publications Essential criteria Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at a consultant level at C&W and ICHNT Publications in peer reviewed journals Desirable criteria Current research projects Higher research degree (MD or PhD) Language Essential criteria Candidates are also able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard Clinical Governance Essential criteria Understanding of clinical governance Participation in audit Desirable criteria Regular audit presentations Development of guidelines Personal qualities Essential criteria Evidence of reflective practice and managing self effectively Excellent communication and influencing skills Ability to forward plan whilst being innovative and flexible in approach Demonstrable evidence of being able and willing to understand the Trust values of respect, kindness, excellence and safety with behaviour that reinforces these values Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team Important The closing date given is a guide only.
