Overview
The Environment Agency is looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. You will work with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes. This role involves coordinating and overseeing all aspects of investigations, from identifying lines of enquiry, reviewing intelligence, raising and allocating actions, coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, through to case-file preparation and, ultimately, prosecution. Investigations can involve Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud.
This role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. You will help lead, coordinate and progress investigations, and contribute to developing the team.
Responsibilities
* Lead and coordinate major environmental crime investigations, in collaboration with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room.
* Identify lines of enquiry, review intelligence, raise and allocate actions, and coordinate evidence gathering and interviews.
* Prepare case files and support the prosecution process.
* Work with Partnership Organisations where applicable and contribute to developing investigative teams and approaches.
* Adapt to the varied and complex nature of cases, including those involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports, and large-scale fraud.
Requirements / Qualifications
* High level of attention to detail, hard-working and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
* In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written communication; basic IT competence (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams).
* Knowledge of environmental crime and experience leading serious criminal investigations; familiarity with Major Incident Room operations is desirable.
* Experience in building and developing investigation teams and driving complex investigations.
* Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting within 6 months of appointment; full driving licence required.
Role specifics
* Hybrid working (home and Environment Agency office) with frequent travel for meetings and operational duties.
* Responding to incidents is a central part of the role; ability to participate in incident roles and provide business continuity support during incidents. Training and workplace adjustments available.
