We are looking for an experienced GP Surgery Receptionist to join our busy team. The successful candidate will have prior experience working in a general practice environment and be confident in using EMIS Web. You will be the first point of contact for patients, both face-to-face and over the phone, and play a key role in ensuring patients receive timely and effective care.


Main duties of the job

* Welcoming patients and visitors in a professional and compassionate manner.
* Handling telephone calls and patient queries efficiently, ensuring appropriate signposting.
* Booking, amending, and cancelling appointments via EMIS Web.
* Processing patient registrations, repeat prescription requests, and clinical correspondence.
* Scanning and accurately registering clinical documents onto patient records.
* Assisting with monitoring and recording data for QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework) KPIs.
* Referring patients to the relevant specialties or external services as directed.
* Supporting clinicians and the wider team with administrative tasks.
* Ensuring confidentiality and compliance with NHS policies, GDPR, and safeguarding procedures.


About us

Alastair Ross Medical Practice is based within Breightmet Health Centre in Bolton. We are a busy GP surgery with a patient list of over 7,000, providing high-quality primary care to our local community.

Our dedicated team works hard to deliver excellent care to patients from all walks of life. The practice is led by four experienced doctors, supported by two skilled practice nurses, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, and a range of healthcare professionals who ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.

Job responsibilities

Greet and assist patients and visitors in a polite, professional, and compassionate manner.

Answer and manage incoming telephone calls, dealing with patient queries and signposting appropriately.

Book, amend, and cancel patient appointments using the practice clinical system (e.g., EMIS Web).

Process new patient registrations, temporary residents, and patient record updates.

Manage repeat prescription requests in line with practice protocols.

Handle patient correspondence, referrals, and medical reports.

Ensure the reception area is tidy, organised, and welcoming at all times.

Scan, code, and file clinical documents into patient records accurately.

* Assist with monitoring and inputting data for QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework) and other performance indicators.

Prepare and send patient referrals to secondary care and community services.

Support the management of recalls, long-term condition reviews, and screening programmes.

Carry out administrative support for clinicians, nurses, and the management team.

Maintain confidentiality and adhere to GDPR and NHS information governance policies.

Contribute to maintaining practice policies, procedures, and quality standards.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Previous experience in a GP surgery / healthcare setting.
* Proficiency in using clinical systems (e.g., EMIS Web).
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Strong IT and administrative skills (Microsoft Office, email, digital systems).
* Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure.
* Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and patient care.


Experience

* Must have previous experience in a GP surgery / healthcare setting.
* Proficiency in using clinical systems (e.g., EMIS Web).
