Summary
The role of Design Manager will lead a specialist team in technical design work for various engineering projects. Responsibilities include managing internal and external interfaces, commercial and contractual matters, and the production of deliverables. The Design Manager will act as a technical leader in the specific discipline within the organisation and will be responsible for managing and developing a team to meet business goals. Additionally, the role will oversee project budgets, control costs, and manage contract changes and variations.
As Design Manager, you will:
* Coordinate client interfaces and serve as the first point of contact for project opportunities.
* Lead the team to ensure timely delivery of high-quality work, adhering to Freedom’s standards.
* Ensure design checks and reviews are conducted, including self-checks, peer reviews, and final approvals.
* Participate in design package reviews and constructability reviews, holding ultimate technical sign-off authority.
* Manage the team’s competency and technical skills, keeping them updated with industry standards and regulatory requirements in the UK.
* Oversee design from a risk management and health and safety perspective, ensuring compliance with CDM2015 and fostering a safety-conscious culture.
* Ensure designs meet construction and operational requirements, including conducting or overseeing risk and hazard surveys (HAZOP/HAZID/HAZAN).
* Support sales activities by generating leads and collaborating with stakeholders to grow the team.
* Manage contract negotiations, development, and execution within the team.
* Participate in project budget reviews, understanding liabilities and risks to support financial performance assessments.
* Use project management techniques to allocate resources, manage budgets and schedules, and ensure projects meet profit and contractual targets.
* Contribute to the development of quality systems and processes to ensure compliance and best practices.
What We’re Looking For
* A bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering or a related field.
* Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional institution (e.g., ICE, IStructE).
* Approximately 10+ years of relevant UK-based experience in consultancy or contracting.
* Strong knowledge of the UK Energy sector and experience working with DNOs.
* Proven experience in multi-disciplinary project management, including budgeting, performance control, programming, and resource management.
* Ability to review detailed commercial and technical documentation.
* Appropriate health and safety qualifications and knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015.
* Proficiency in Autodesk software and MS365 tools (Excel, Word, Outlook).
* Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
* Experience in preparing proposals and tenders.
* Involvement in planning construction phase activities.
* Experience with temporary works and familiarity with CDE and BIM workflows.
Qualifications:
* Chartership with the UK Engineering Council and membership of a professional institution.
* Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering.
* Full UK Driving License.
