We havean exciting opportunity for an Aseptic Pharmacy Technician at BuckinghamshireHealthcare NHS Trust. You will be based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital within theTechnical Services pharmacy unit. Your will be responsible for organising and supervising the work of pharmacy technicians and support staff, deputising forthe Band 6 Pharmacy Technician, and supporting the training and development of pharmacy colleagues, including Trainee and Rotational Pharmacists. You will also supervise non-pharmacy personnel, such as cleaners, estates staff, and maintenance contractors, while they work within the aseptic unit, ensuring compliance with all safety and quality standards. You may be required to work across the pharmacy unit as needed to support the service.
Main duties of the job
As anAseptic Pharmacy Technician, you will be responsible for the safe and accurate preparation and dispensing of cytotoxic, aseptic, and parenteral nutrition products for individual patients, following Standard Operating Procedures(SOPs). You will manage the day-to-day running of the local unlicensed aseptic unit, ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), National Guidelines, COSHH, and all relevant Trust policies and SOPs. You will also contribute to the development of pharmaceutical services and promote the highest standards of professional practice, while adhering to the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) standards for Pharmacy Professionals or the Science Council Standards for Registered Science Technicians.
Job responsibilities
* To organise and manage the supply of aseptically prepared medicines to patients, wards, theatres, and departments, contributing to service development and implementing improvements where necessary.
* To aseptically prepare and dispense cytotoxic chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies, parenteral nutrition, supportive therapies, and oral chemotherapy for inpatients, outpatients, day cases, and clinical trials in accordance with local SOPs.
* To liaise with healthcare professionals, including chemotherapy nurses, to ensure medicines are prepared in advance, and provide advice and troubleshooting for ambulatory pumps and specialist infusion devices.
* To maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with quality standards, including environmental monitoring, cleaning logs, microbiology reports, servicing records, and audit recommendations, escalating deviations as required.
* To support training, competency, and accreditation, including intrathecal chemotherapy preparation, clinical trials setup, and mentoring colleagues within the aseptic unit.
* To ensure safe handling, disposal, and supply management, including expired medicines, cytotoxic waste, used sharps, and liaising with procurement and distribution staff to resolve supply issues.
Qualifications
* Experience in an aseptic pharmacy hospital setting.
* Competent in the safe and accurate preparation of chemotherapy, CIVAS products, and other aseptic medicines.
* Completed or willing to complete required training to support learners on GPhC-accredited courses prior to course start.
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
