Sessional Lecturer in Art & Design (Fine Art, Textiles & Fashion)
Due to growth in applications at MidKent College Medway Campus and Medway School of Arts in The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, we are looking to recruit several Art and Design lecturers to teach across a range of courses from L1 to L5 on Foundation Degree / HND Programmes. We require a diverse range of skills, to facilitate our growing number of courses from fine art, fashion design, graphics, and digital media.
We are seeking candidates from fine art, textiles, and fashion design backgrounds with the ability to design, deliver, and assess high-quality creative study programmes across our FE and HE courses at Medway School of Art and MKC Medway Campus, focusing on fine art, textiles, and fashion, including skills in pattern cutting and fashion design. The ideal candidate will be passionate about inspiring and motivating students through outstanding teaching and learning strategies that challenge students to excel in their subject.
Candidates should be dynamic, highly skilled, and experienced academic practitioners with industry experience and/or a postgraduate degree in their subject area. A passion for teaching and an understanding of developing students’ employability skills within the subject area are essential.
Main Responsibilities and Duties:
The following outlines the main priorities expected of this role, as directed by the Deputy Principal, Assistant Principal, Executive Director, or Director of Service. This list is not exhaustive:
1. Deliver high-quality teaching in accordance with College standards and applicable validating/moderating bodies, including preparing teaching materials, schemes of work, and lesson plans, developing curricula, and undertaking quality assurance in collaboration with the Head of Department. Assess students’ work, monitor progress, and report on their achievements, including maintaining student records and ensuring statutory compliance such as safeguarding, equal opportunities, and health and safety.
2. Manage day-to-day course activities, including communication, problem solving, timetable management, providing cover for lessons, planning work experience and enrichment activities, coordinating internal verification, and liaising with relevant departments to ensure compliance and consistency across sites.
3. Assist with recruitment and enrolment procedures, including managing Qualifications on Entry, transfers, and late enrolments, and organizing induction programmes for students.
4. Conduct meetings with students, including setting and reviewing SMART targets, assisting with UCAS applications, supporting pastoral needs, and liaising with college services such as Personal Development Tutors.
5. Monitor student attendance and results, administer course performance monitoring, and report on attendance, retention, achievement, and success, implementing action plans as needed.
6. Promote and support English and Maths provision, including monitoring attendance and student progress in these subjects.
7. Attend meetings and events such as staff meetings, parent evenings, marketing events, and participate in CPD activities, including peer observation and mentoring.
8. Contribute to departmental administration, including marking registers, updating records, producing reports, and managing the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
9. Participate in college committees, quality assurance processes, and course reviews.
For lecturers on SPS points 5–8, additional responsibilities include internal verification, moderation, standardization, monitoring action plans, resource coordination, supporting curriculum and quality issues, and liaising with Higher Education Institutions.
