The post holder will play a vital role in teaching, research, and associated administration within the auspices of the newly formed Glasgow Initiative forGlobal mental health andTreatmentInnovationCollaborations (GIGANTIC). A core aim of this initiative is to extend and strengthen the excellent reputation Glasgow University has as a provider of high-quality science-based mental health research and practice. They will provide leadership in the development, delivery and administration of the current doctoral training programme (the DClinPsy) and contribute significantly to the implementation and development of the new GIGANTIC iPhD programme. The role also involves leading a programme of research aligned with wider departmental and school priorities. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Programme Director and Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing (MHW).

Job Purpose

To make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through leading and contributing to research of international standard, high quality teaching at postgraduate level, securing research funding, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College. To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach relevant to the science and practice of clinical psychology and/or mental health science.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide senior leadership in the development, delivery, and strategic direction of the doctoral training portfolio (the DClinPsy and GIGANTIC iPhD) ensuring academic excellence and alignment with key priorities.

2. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy and contributing to knowledge generation on topics relevant to clinical psychology and/or mental health science.

3. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.

4. Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including Knowledge Exchange, which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the University.

5.Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality administration of the DClinPsy and GIGANTIC iPhD, setting and monitoring standards, and leading on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams (beyond subject/school level).

6. Create and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders in health and research settings in the UK and internationally to ensure the course produces graduates who are highly sought after for employment after completion of the degree.

7.Develop and maintain a strategic approach to embedding learning technologies to enhance the delivery, organisation, feedback and assessment on the doctoral programme.

8. Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.

9. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally.

10. Establish and maintain networks with external stakeholders and use these relationships to influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University and the profession of clinical psychology.

11.Supervise individual student projects at postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.

12. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Line Manager and/or Head of School.

14. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

A1. An undergraduate degree in psychology (or equivalent by recognised conversion course) with an honours grade of 2.1 or above.

A2. PhD, Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, or equivalent post-graduate qualification in psychology that confers eligibility for chartered status with the British Psychological Society (BPS).

A3. Recognised expertise in clinical psychology to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.

A4. A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level or equivalent experience obtained in applied settings (e.g. the NHS).

A5. Knowledge of issues relevant to the current practice and of clinical psychology and related areas of specialist practice in the UK and internationally.

A6. Engagement with the current and future priorities of University/College/Service strategies, aims and ambitions.

A7. Membership of a relevant professional body such as the BPS, ACP-UK (or eligibility for membership).

Desirable

B1. Professional licensing/registration to practice as a clinical psychologist.

B2. Emerging or established reputation as a global mental health research leader.

B3. Sub-speciality expertise in psychological therapy, quality improvement, or mental health science research methods.

Skills

Essential

C1. Proven ability to plan and lead staff and efficiently deploy resources in support of major research and teaching activities.

C2. Ability to disseminate complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences to promote understanding.

C3. Ability to undertake academic leadership of groups/activities with substantial impact on finance and other resources.

C4. Ability to forge new and effective relationships with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions.

C5. Ability to demonstrate independent thought in order to generate original research and secure research income.

Experience

Essential

E1. Substantial track record of published research of international standard compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the REF and/or other indicators of advanced expertise in applied clinical psychology and/or mental health science.

E2. Established track record of applying for and/or successfully securing funding for research projects, as appropriate for the subject specialism.

E3. Internationally recognised excellence and reputation in clinical psychology practice and/or scholarship of teaching in applied practice.

E4. Proven track record of developing and devising teaching programmes, techniques and methods.

E5. Track record of student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early career academic colleagues in the field of clinical psychology.

E6. Demonstrated commitment to open research practices and practices that support replication.

E7. Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

E8. Extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline of clinical psychology and/or global mental health.

Desirable

F1. Experience of conducting global mental health research.

F2. Established research and/or training collaborations with international partners.

F3. Familiarity with mental health service delivery models internationally (including the UK).

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 9,£59,139 - £66,537 per annum

A market supplement may be added for eligible candidates such as Clinical Psychologists moving from AfC pay scales in the NHS with appropriate experience.

This post is full time and fixed for up to 12 months.
