Overview
The postholder will support and observe the woman and her baby through the antenatal, postnatal, and intrapartum period, reporting to the midwife/team leader any changes or information concerning the wellbeing of the woman and her family. The postholder regularly works without direct supervision. Confidentiality and privacy must be always adhered to.
Responsibilities
* Provide safe, effective, and evidence-based care under supervision of a midwife.
* Record detailed clinical information and complete relevant assessment tools (e.g., observations, national, manual handling and local assessments) related to the health and well-being of the mother and baby.
* Represent the team as MCA and contribute to a normal and positive birth experience where possible.
* Support midwifery and medical staff in the provision of care within the maternity department. The role is designed to be rotational between departments within the maternity unit and day/night duty allocations.
* Undertake clinical, clerical, and housekeeping duties to contribute to the effective functioning of the maternity unit.
* Undertake a planned course of study at foundation degree level, Care Certificate, to establish a basic knowledge base for the role, including training such as adult life support, drills and skills, breastfeeding support, newborn care, maternal and neonatal screening, safeguarding, and health promotion.
* Following training and with consent, assist in screening processes (e.g., phlebotomy, glucose tolerance, and newborn bloodspot screening).
* Support and assist users of the maternity department with physical and emotional needs, including general health advice (e.g., smoking cessation and diet) and basic observations (temperature, blood pressure, respiration).
* Participate in and support clinical governance processes, following guidelines and supporting the audit programme.
Qualifications and Training
* Foundation degree level course plan, Care Certificate, with basic training in areas such as adult life support, newborn care, breastfeeding support, safeguarding, and health promotion.
* Post-training involvement in screening processes as appropriate and with professional consent.
