We have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Civil Structural Design Engineer for decarbonisation projects to join our Carbon Shift business unit. Our Carbon Shift consulting business focuses on realisable climate action and net zero plans, supported by capability in heat decarbonisation, regeneration, Facilities Management, Project delivery, EVs, smart buildings and renewables. Carbon Shift has developed strong expertise and client base around net zero and energy transition and is expanding to address broader climate adaptation and resilience challenges.
Key activities
This role will manage civil and structural engineering and design development, working with a team of in-house specialist engineers and subconsultants. Typical civil and structural work includes engineering buildings/structures and foundations, drainage systems, highways access, site temporary/permanent roadways, utilities/services distribution, solar superstructures, etc. The role will join an established Engineering Team whose work spans innovative renewable energy generation and energy efficiency, offering opportunities to gain experience in a rapidly growing market on pioneering low-carbon schemes.
Responsibilities
* Lead the civil and structural design and engineering development of utility-scale renewable energy projects, from early concept through construction. This includes early design development, design calculations, coordination, interrogation, validation and optimisation of civil and structural design, and liaison with specialist consultants and other engineering teams to ensure coordination with electrical, mechanical, public health design, ecology, soft landscaping, archaeology, and other disciplines.
* Manage and maintain design technical compliance with Employer’s Requirements, statutory requirements and relevant design standards.
* Project-manage the civil and structural design process.
* Develop conceptual designs, design/performance specifications and outline scopes of work to enable commissioning of detailed design, design & build contract specifications and specialist consultancy support. Liaise with procurement teams for technical advice in appraisal and selection of supply chains.
* Lead commissioning of insourced/outsourced design and specialist consultancy, through preparation of technical briefs, design scopes and performance specifications. Coordinate with design managers of other disciplines.
* Manage relevant statutory processes and coordinate preparation of relevant applications.
* Interrogate and optimise civil and structural designs, identify cost efficiencies and undertake cost/benefit assessments for value engineering opportunities.
* Assist in delivering Construction Design & Management Principal Designer duties, including preparation of Pre-Construction Information, Designer’s Risk Assessments, Hazard Assessments and mitigations.
* Assist in developing Commissioning Plans, Integrated Test Plans, Quality Acceptance Test Plans, and conduct quality inspections as needed.
* Liaise with clients to refine project briefs, objectives, constraints and requirements; present engineering proposals and business cases, supported by other team members.
* Liaise with manufacturers and suppliers to gain knowledge of technology capabilities and their application to renewable energy developments. Undertake discrete cost-benefit assessments and assess compatibility with project requirements.
* Liaise with construction teams and contractors to transition to implementation, programming and sequencing of works; undertake site inspections to ensure design compliance and address on-site design/technical matters.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
* Advanced understanding of civil and structural engineering and design.
* Good knowledge of British Standards, design guides and Building Regulations.
* Aware of health and safety and CDM regulations.
* Competent in standard industry design software, including AutoCAD, Tuflow, Microdrainage.
* Experience using standard industry design and project management tools (e.g., AutoDesk, View For Projects, Microsoft Project, Pro-Core).
* Competent in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
* Understanding of legislation, regulations and standards applicable to civil and structural design, ideally specific to low-carbon heating/cooling.
* Aware of stakeholder involvement within the project life cycle and environmental, cultural and health & safety considerations in design.
* Able to prepare draft specifications, stage reports, tender documentation; follow quality assurance processes.
* Understanding of environmental factors affecting civil and structural design.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
