Job Description

The Environment Agency is fully committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all vacancies. Join us in a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued.

The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sector, which is responsible for 24% of UK greenhouse gas emissions. The sector must decarbonise by 2050 and double electricity production while ensuring energy security. Through effective regulation, we protect people and the environment from emissions and mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts.

Role Overview

We are recruiting for a fixed‑term role, up to 2 years, for an individual with experience in regulating or working in energy sectors such as combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries.

Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance and training.
* Develop strategy for our sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where required.
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players.
* Respond to incidents and provide business continuity support during incidents.

Team and Environment

The Energy & COMAH team is part of the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation Directorate (E&B). Our technical experts define standards for our sectors and provide strategic direction, guidance and training to deliver new duties and best practice.

Experience and Skills Required

* Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and encourage consideration of diversity issues.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge and experience of the work area for the role, including control measures for emissions to air.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia.
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.

Competence Questions

* Legislative Knowledge: Apply statutory environmental and technical requirements to protect the Environment Agency and the environment. Provide examples of differing regulatory requirements for two combustion installations.
* Works in Teams: Describe how you have worked with senior advisors to deliver a portfolio of work, prioritise responsibilities and flex to help each other.
* Builds and Sustains Relationships: Explain how you have worked with various stakeholders, adapting your approach to reflect different contexts.

Contract and Travel

Length of contract: Up to 2 years.

Some travel will be required.

Application Process

Applications will be assessed using competency answers. Feedback is generally not available at the application stage.

For questions about this role, contact Emma Preston or Charlotte Sholl at combustion@environment-agency.gov.uk.

The vacancy closes at the end of October. Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham by the end of November.

Legal and Equal Employment Opportunity

We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome flexible working patterns. A Guaranteed Interview Policy supports those with a disability.

The Environment Agency is a Non‑Departmental Public Body committed to value for money. We cannot engage directly through post, email or phone calls for external recruitment.

Artificial intelligence can support your application, but all statements must be truthful and original. Plagiarism or AI‑generated content may lead to withdrawal of applications.
