Senior Network Engineer at Oxford Nanopore Technologies
Oxford Nanopore Technologies is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park outside Oxford, UK, with satellite offices and a commercial presence in many global locations across the US, APAC and Europe.
Core Responsibilities
* Plan, build, and deliver new network capabilities and deployments from standards and design documents to meet the needs of the business.
* Maintain network security through proper configuration of firewalls, wireless access points, and VPNs.
* Maintain multi–site network operations to support internal applications, operating systems including regular maintenance with both private and public facilities.
* Physical installation and maintenance of network, power, and server hardware.
* Creating and maintaining documentation and network diagrams.
* Full lifecycle management of network devices as well as support and development of network management and monitoring systems.
* Performing regular preventative maintenance tasks such as capacity management and software updates.
Qualifications and Experience
* Experience running, managing and implementing all aspects of a global enterprise network architecture (WAN, campus and data centre).
* Enterprise and data centre routing and switching architectures, including OSPF, BGP, ECMP, and VXLAN.
* Network security architectures and SASE, including firewalls, VPN and IDS/IPS.
* Data centre power, cooling and cabling standards, including experience of single and multi–mode fibre optic networks.
* Experience working with WAN providers and fibre network infrastructure, including DIA, SD‑WAN, wavelength and dark fibre circuits.
* Understanding of VPN technologies including security and cryptographic standards.
* Experience of deploying, managing and maintaining network monitoring systems.Network access control systems and protocols, such as AAA, RADIUS, 802.1x.
* DHCP, DNS, IPAM and SSL/PKI technologies.
* Excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting skills at every level of the OSI model, from cabling, through network devices to the operating system and applications.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage staff at all levels.
* Good organisational skills, ability to handle multiple projects and work items.
* Ideal if currently certified.
* Occasional out of hours and weekend work required, comprising both remote and on‑site work.
Preferred Skills
* Experience with scripting, automation or orchestration deployment tools.
* Exposure to a range of different networking vendors and solutions.
* Understanding of information security standards, e.g. ISO 27001.
* Strong AWS or other cloud network experience, including technologies such as DirectConnect, VPC, Transit Gateway, Security Groups or their equivalents.
* Systems administration experience within a mixed Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and/or Android environments, including physical and virtual environments.
* Good understanding of technology solutions beyond networking.
