Your leadership will directly influence the development of our governance, strategic direction, and organisational structure—ensuring we are equipped to scale our work and deepen our impact across the West Midlands and beyond. You will help strengthen Persona Arts’ visibility, credibility, and sustainability within the UK’s arts and charitable sectors. By guiding the Board and supporting the executive team, you will ensure that our programmes continue to engage diverse audiences and communities who have historically had limited access to opera and classical music. Your input will help us build a more representative, community-rooted organisation—one that breaks down barriers to the classical arts, nurtures emerging talent, and creates new pathways into performance, participation, and appreciation. Through your advocacy and networks, you can help open doors to funding, partnerships, and new audiences. You will also support the creation of inclusive opportunities for people from all backgrounds to experience high-quality productions and meaningful community arts experiences. Ultimately, your leadership will enable Persona Arts to become a beacon for inclusive, accessible, and community-driven opera and choral work in the UK—paving the way for greater equity and representation across the wider classical music sector.

What will you be doing?
Chair of the Board of Trustees Persona Arts is seeking a Chair to lead our Board. This is a rewarding opportunity to help shape the future of an ambitious and inclusive arts charity that champions access to opera and classical music across the West Midlands’ diverse communities. About Persona Arts Persona Arts is a Birmingham-based charity dedicated to bringing high-quality opera & choral arts to new and underrepresented audiences. Building on the legacy of BJ Music Events, and artistically led by international Black opera singer Byron Jackson FRSA, we’ve delivered a range of community and professional performances—including a recent production of Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. We work to dismantle cultural and social barriers to the classical arts, empowering participation and audience development. Role You will provide strong and inclusive leadership to the Board, supporting effective governance and ensuring strategic alignment with the charity’s mission. You will act as a key ambassador, advocate and connector, supporting the Artistic Director (AD) and team in delivering our ambitious plans. Key Responsibilities Lead the Board of Trustees, ensuring strong governance and oversight. Chair around 3 board meetings a year (mostly online). Provide strategic support and critical friendship to the AD. Represent the organisation to key stakeholders and act as an ambassador. Support fundraising and partnership development where appropriate. Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive board culture. Person Specification Proven leadership experience, ideally as a Chair or in a senior role. Strategic mindset, sound judgement, and ability to work collaboratively. A strong appreciation of, or experience in, opera and classical music is desirable. Experience or understanding of the UK’s opera and classical music sectors is an advantage. Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, especially in widening access to the arts. Understanding of charity governance and the duties of trustees. Connection to the West Midlands and/or its diverse communities is preferable. This is a voluntary role. Expenses will be reimbursed.
