Job Purpose
To provide functional leadership to three infectious disease laboratories (veterinary virology, veterinary microbiology, and veterinary parasitology) within the SBOHVM’s Veterinary Diagnostic Service (VDS), managing this major service with a significant degree of autonomy. The role involves strategic development of the service, integrating commercial work with academic research activities, and enhancing its international reputation. The post holder will develop links with biotechnology enterprises to attract commercial diagnostic contracts and foster collaborations. In collaboration with the academic head of infectious disease, the post holder will develop novel, leading-edge diagnostics for companion animals to maintain profitability.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assume responsibility for planning, managing, and operating the technical service, overseeing bacteriology, parasitology, and virology diagnostic laboratories.
2. Manage a rapid and efficient service, ensuring accurate testing and reporting from internal/external veterinarians and institutions, including quality assurance, assessing ongoing test requirements, prioritizing, and delegating tasks.
3. Use specialist knowledge to develop and deliver the infectious disease service within a changing veterinary diagnostic marketplace.
4. Utilize specialist resources to formulate new methods with improved sensitivity and accuracy, enhancing the testing portfolio and international reputation.
5. Collaborate with the academic head to develop partnerships with research scientists and commercial companies on scholarly and commercial projects.
6. Manage the laboratory budget, monitor spending, and take remedial actions if necessary.
7. Develop staff capacity, integrating the three disciplines into an effective service, and motivate/mentor staff to meet current and future requirements.
8. Contribute to the management of the diagnostic service and the School through relevant committees.
9. Prioritize and allocate resources to meet the objectives of the infectious disease service and the broader veterinary diagnostic service.
10. Deliver teaching and training, imparting knowledge and skills to students, scientists, clinicians, nurses, and technical staff through tutorials, seminars, and one-on-one teaching.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
* Essential: Degree or equivalent in a related subject; working knowledge of diagnostic virology, bacteriology, and parasitology; knowledge of health and safety issues and university policies.
* Desirable: Postgraduate qualification in Biological Sciences or Virology/Microbiology; extensive practical knowledge in diagnostic and research techniques including molecular biology, tissue culture, assays, and virus purification.
Skills
* Essential: Ability to interpret diagnostic findings, think strategically, train partners and scientists, devise and interpret experiments, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills, including expertise in IT systems like LIMS.
* Desirable: Advanced skills in veterinary virology.
Experience
* Essential: Significant diagnostic laboratory experience; independent working; extensive molecular and serological testing experience; extensive IT experience.
* Desirable: Research experience with publications; staff leadership and supervision experience.
Terms and Conditions
