This role leads on the strategic development and implementation of the Centre for Biomedicine & Health Innovation. The Director will: lead the formulation and execution of a compelling strategy to achieve high quality impactful research; foster a transformative and collaborative research culture and establish world‑class research programmes, and secure significant funding through collaborations with partners.
* Shape and implement the centre's research strategy, ensuring alignment with ARU R&I priorities and with global trends;
* Support the professional development of centre members to conduct original research which attracts external funding and produces high-impact research outputs and outcomes;
* Initiate collaboration with other centres to drive interdisciplinary research, shaping our research landscape;
* Work with relevant Heads of School and other research centre directors to develop a positive research culture and raise the profile externally for our research, innovation and impact in this area;
* Work with other teams to implement university strategy and value;
* Lead members of the research centre in fostering a culture of research excellence;
* Develop strategy to support centre members in developing their own research as well as to support collaboration to secure external funding;
* Champion innovative research that positions the centre as a global leader in its focus areas;
* Ensure that research outcomes are translated into impactful real-world applications, including science, business, policy, products, services, and training of future global leaders;
* Actively contribute to the research, innovation and impact activities of the centre through your own areas of expertise;
* Align the centre's research activities with the target REF UoAs;
* Support REF to ensure the submission of the highest-quality research and impact to the REF;
* Proactively create opportunities to expand the postgraduate research community, developing multidisciplinary supervision teams, proactively securing external funding for PGR studentships, nurturing the next generation of leaders in the field;
* Build strong collaborations with industry partners, government agencies, and academic institutions to drive impactful research and knowledge exchange;
* Establish partnerships to explore joint programmes and pursue consultancy and commercialisation opportunities;
* Establish and nurture global partnerships, supporting members and creating opportunities for international collaborative and cross-border research;
* Working with Deputy Deans for R&I and PVCDs to oversee the centre's budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources to support the development of research projects and strategic initiatives;
* Develop and implement KPIs to track research productivity and impact, providing regular reports to senior leadership, and Faculty Executive Teams;
* Comply with Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR requirements in all working practices maintaining confidentiality, integrity, availability, accuracy, currency and security of information as appropriate. Take personal responsibility for all personal data within own working environment;
* Comply with Safeguarding responsibilities as detailed in the policy and procedure;
* Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required, commensurate with your grade.
* First degree;
* Higher degree or professional qualifications at postgraduate level in a relevant subject area;
* PhD or Professional Doctorate in a relevant subject area;
* Currently holding the title of Professor within another UK University or the ability to meet our criteria (please refer to the Professorial Appointment Pack attached, for further information). Professor or Associate Professor in the relevant areas of the Centre, with strong track record of developing research team/group and fostering collaboration;
* Proven track record, including securing significant levels of external research funding and producing high-impact publications;
* Experience in research leadership, managing research teams, and delivering successful projects;
* Expertise in building strategic partnerships with academia, industry, and government;
* A track record of internationally recognised research outputs;
* Successful and significant research‑led teaching experience at HE level in a relevant subject area;
* Experience leading and managing course and curriculum design;
* PhD/Professional Doctorate supervision experience to completion;
* Significant and sustained contribution to researcher development;
* Established academic reputation as evidenced by contribution to subject development/collaborative partnerships at a national/international level.
* Demonstratable ability to drive a step‑change in the centre's growth and impact;
* Demonstrable in‑depth knowledge/experience in leading large‑scale research teams and managing complex projects.
* Strong leadership and management skills with a visionary, strategic approach;
* A good level of knowledge for research integrity and ethics;
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster collaboration within the centre and with external partners across sectors;
* Proven success in navigating the funding landscape and securing external funding;
* Deep understanding of global research dynamics and the ability to drive innovation and impact;
* Familiarity with the funding environment in UKHE;
* Excellent written and oral communication skills;
* Other IT literate with a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office;
* Ability to meet deadlines, including under pressure.
