Maternity
There are 2 similar sized consultant-led maternity units at BNHH and RHCH which together deliver 5500 women. In addition, Hampshire Hospitals' Maternity Centre at Andover offers midwifery-led care and birth with a community birth rate above the national average. Antenatal care is provided within the hospital and the community by hospital staff, midwives, general practitioners and consultants. There are weekly antenatal clinics for diabetes, fetal and maternal medicine, specialist midwifery and external cephalic version.
Both acute sites provide Level 2 intensive care for babies above 27 weeks' gestation. Mothers who are less than 27 weeks are usually transferred antenatally, or if delivered locally, stabilised and subsequently transferred to a Level 3 unit.
