Job overview
The Northwest of England has joined together to form a Maternal Medicine Network: this includes the three local maternity systems Greater Manchester and East Cheshire (GMEC), Cheshire & Mersey (C&M) and Lancashire and South Cumbria (L&SC) working with commissioners, providers, clinicians, the Maternity Clinical Network, service users via the Maternity Voices Partnerships and has the support of the integrated Care Boards. The aim is to provide equitable and expert support for women with pre-existing or pregnancy-induced significant medical issues, to ensure sustainability of that care wherever in the region they may live, and additionally, to provide perinatal mental health support or other onward referral as required.
The Northwest Maternal Medicine Network is made up of three specialist Maternal Medicine Centres (MMCs) held within St Mary’s Hospital Manchester, Liverpool Women’s Hospital and The Royal Preston Hospital alongside services delivered in local DGHs supporting the population of the Northwest of England. The post holder will work for UHMB and coordinate care for service users requiring support from either one of the specialist centres alongside services delivered within the unit.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have responsibility for the effective and efficient Maternal Medicine service within UHMBT. They provide clinical and professional management and leadership for the Maternal Medicine service. The post holder is responsible for ensuring the assessment of care needs and development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care are maintained to a high standard. They manage the reporting aspects of the Maternal Medicine and ensures cost effective use of resources.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals – Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal – as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of general hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of general hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person specification
* Midwifery Masters degree or demonstrable evidence of working at that level
* Recognised teaching/assessing qualification
* Evidence of continued professional development
* Willing to undergo training as necessary
* Experience of leading or managing a team
* Knowledge of care pathways for complex maternal conditions
* Awareness of current issues in maternity
* Experience working in high risk maternity/obstetric unit
* Willingness to work towards masters degree
* Experience of service development/change management
