Job Description Summary
The Secondary Design Manager will lead a geographically diverse team of designers, sub‑contractors, engineers and project teams working on protection and control schematics and substation equipment. The role will offer a high level overview of design and interface with various teams throughout the project cycle.
Responsibilities
* Be the technical guarantor of the proper performance of design works conditions in your field of activity, ensuring compliance with committed design budget (man‑days), deadlines and quality, in line with customer expectations and promoting ease of installation, operation and maintenance.
* Plan basic and detailed design activities, manage and oversee detailed execution progress, and coordinate delivery of required engineering documentation for procurement, manufacturing and site erection.
* Scope work and time schedule; establish, based on tender, contract analysis and project strategy, the list of documents to produce for your field of activity.
* Evaluate with PEM or PM engineering workload and delivery dates; commit to budget in man‑days and time delivery.
* Ensure on‑time delivery of design, including partner documents, to stakeholders with suitable quality.
* Anticipate and mitigate delivery issues and recommend changes.
* Lead and coordinate your design team.
* Manage and monitor detailed execution progress and short‑term plan.
* Request required technical coordination meetings with partners or key suppliers, if appropriate, to synchronize respective designs.
* Manage design time spent in man‑hours on relevant activities.
* Follow and implement project strategy.
* Highlight scope or design changes (e.g., data for claims, VO).
* Inform PEM / PM of design issues throughout project execution and propose solution options for decision; follow solutions agreed to resolution.
* Analyze customer technical requirements and ensure compliance.
* Represent customer interests in design decisions at PM request.
* Coordinate with partners concerning customer technical comments on their scope.
* Seek cost optimisation in all design phases, mainly during basic design.
* Maintain technical consistency of the design area.
* Check design subcontractor deliverables.
Desired Skills & Experience
* Relevant degree – electrical or mechanical, function of field of activity involved.
* Good level of engineering experience in the related activity/discipline, preferably in project & EPC type environment in T&D, Power Gen or Oil & Gas industry, or 2–4 medium set projects in a Lead Engineer position.
* Experience of project technical management processes, preferably in a multi‑disciplinary team context with multiple interfaces.
* Several experiences managing externally subcontracted design work packages of various sizes.
* Knowledge of Transmission or Distribution industry.
