Senior Electrical Engineer – Environment Agency
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team. The successful candidate will bring knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment, and expertise in control systems design, SCADA/telemetry systems and electrical safety rules.
Responsibilities
As a technical authority, you will provide engineering leadership across the organisation to support the delivery of safe, reliable and sustainable assets. Your day‑to‑day tasks will include:
* Developing, maintaining and applying electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules for HV and LV power systems and control systems in assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures.
* Delivering competency and skills guidance for all employees working with electrical systems, ensuring compliance with national regulations and internal policies.
* Co‑ordinating national incident response duties, which may require working outside normal hours.
* Collaborating with the MEICA Engineering Standards team and other departments to shape future service delivery and meet net‑zero commitments.
Qualifications & Experience
* Good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Strong understanding of control systems, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Experience with high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Knowledge of safe systems of work, risk assessments, method statements and the development and delivery of safe systems of work.
* Proficiency in testing, isolation and proving of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance, including failure mode effect analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Experience drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work‑management, team‑working and communication skills.

Additional Information
This is a hybrid role with a base location near your home. Some travel and overnight stays may be required. You will have an incident management objective in your development plan and will receive appropriate training.
