Why this job matters
The AWS Data Engineering Manager plays a critical role in BT’s DD Ops transformation, leading the design, implementation, and optimization of data infrastructure that supports automated, intelligent operations. The role manages a team of skilled data engineers responsible for building and maintaining scalable, secure, high-performance data pipelines that handle both structured and unstructured data from various sources. These pipelines underpin real-time insights, predictive analytics, and AI Ops capabilities across BT’s networks.
What you’ll be doing – your accountabilities
* Team Leadership & Coaching: Lead and mentor data engineers, guiding complex projects and fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
* Technical Direction & Strategy: Define the technical vision for data engineering, with expertise in big data, systems design, machine learning, and cloud infrastructure.
* Data Infrastructure & Optimization: Oversee development and maintenance of high-quality datasets and optimized codebases supporting data products and scalable architectures.
* Agile Delivery & Best Practices: Ensure adherence to Agile methodologies and engineering best practices for delivering high-quality solutions.
* Data Quality & Visibility: Manage data sources to define and monitor data quality, pipeline health, and infrastructure performance indicators.
* Resource Management: Allocate engineering resources effectively to address priorities and ensure measurable outcomes.
* Solution Design & Delivery: Translate business needs into scalable data solutions aligned with strategic timelines.
* Vendor & Partner Collaboration: Manage relationships with external partners, setting clear expectations on deliverables, quality, and costs.
* Innovation & Knowledge Sharing: Promote emerging trends in data engineering and foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
* Talent Development: Coach and develop team members through upskilling, performance management, and recruitment.
* Process Improvement: Lead initiatives to enhance workflows, tools, and practices for greater efficiency.
The skills you’ll need to succeed
* Leadership in data engineering and Agile delivery
* Advanced knowledge of AWS data services (e.g., S3, Glue, EMR, Lambda, Redshift)
* Expertise in big data technologies and distributed systems
* Strong coding skills (Python, Spark, SQL)
* Data quality management and observability
* Strategic thinking and solution architecture
* Stakeholder and vendor management
* Continuous improvement mindset
* Excellent communication and mentoring skills
Experience you’d be expected to have
* Proven experience managing data engineering teams in cloud environments
* Track record of delivering scalable data solutions aligned with business goals
* Hands-on experience with modern data platforms, pipelines, and governance frameworks
* Familiarity with machine learning workflows and data science enablement
* Experience working with cross-functional teams and external partners
