Job Summary
The Senior Theatre Practitioner will work part‑time (20 hours per week) with the theatre department at St. Hughs Hospital, Grimsby. The role provides clinical leadership, supports staff development, and contributes to continuous improvement of patient safety and service delivery across anaesthetics, recovery and/or scrub specialties.
Responsibilities
* Lead and support the theatre team as a senior practitioner and circulating member.
* Carry out safety checks of swabs, instruments and needles in partnership with a second person.
* Provide technical supervision and teaching of scrub skills for all surgical specialities and complexities.
* Perform and supervise dual‑role operations in accordance with hospital policy and risk assessment.
* Assist with preparation, clearance and labelling of theatres and specimens, and maintain accurate operative records.
* Attend on‑call sessions as required and support theatre management with staffing, equipment and process improvement.
* Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and quality assurance activities.
* Provide training, induction and mentorship to new staff and students in the department.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* Registered nurse or health‑care professional with HCPC/NMC registration.
* Graduate to diploma/degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant health‑care field.
* Experience scrubbing for all surgical specialities, including orthopaedics, ophthalmology, gynaecology, urology, spinal, plastics, general surgery, minor vascular and ENT.
* Ability to teach and assess technical skills and to act as a circulating member.
* Leadership experience in a clinical setting and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, safeguarding and professional development.
* Intermediate life support qualification; Advanced life support (desirable).
Desirable Attributes
* Completed competence in scrub for complex cases.
* Audit experience and evidence of reflective practice.
* Surgical First Assistant qualification.
* Teaching, mentoring or postgraduate qualification in peri‑operative practice.
* Advanced life support qualification.
