Job purpose

You will be part of a team of 20 Journalists based in Glasgow working across digital, TV and radio. We make the global technology programme Tech Now, the World Service radio programme Tech Life, and our content runs across BBC News – online, on TV, and on radio.

We have built a hub of journalistic excellence, broadcasting to the world with a particular remit to reach underserved audiences, find under-covered stories, and to explain the big technology and innovation issues and developments in an accessible way. We also cover the changing trends around the world.

The Technology & Innovation Story Team is part of the wider Money and Work Team, formerly the BBC’s Business Unit, with journalists based in London, Salford, Glasgow and across the world.

Why join the team

This is an opportunity for a Video Journalist who has an instinct for the stories that matter, and which capture the interest and imagination of the audience. You will primarily work on our global tech show - Tech Now – researching, producing, filming and editing films. You will make creative video content which works well on all our linear and digital platforms, with the aim of maximising impact across BBC News and attracting new young audiences. We work in a collaborative, creative and inclusive way. We work flexibly, with journalists given opportunities to develop new skills.

Your responsibilities and impact

* Our brief is Technology and Innovation - and we have a mission to bring all stories in that area to life, and help the audience understand how the big changes in these areas affect their lives and futures.
* As a video journalist, your core role will be to research, pitch, produce, script, film and edit high-quality video content.
* You’ll be one of a small team working on Tech Now – and you will need to be comfortable juggling multiple projects at the same time
* You’ll contribute creative ideas for storytelling, experimenting with formats and approaches to engage new audiences on digital platforms
* You’ll be confident in researching complex story topics, scripting, filming and editing video
* This role involves flexibility and requires regular travel across the UK and abroad.

Your skills and experience

Essential Criteria

* You will be experienced in going out on shoots, filming and editing creative video content with a proven track record of originating and developing story ideas
* You will be organised, with experience of juggling multiple projects at the same time.
* You will have a good knowledge and understanding of how to turn ideas into creative, informative and entertaining video content, as well as excellent journalistic skills and a high level of editorial awareness and judgement.
* You will have excellent research and communication skills - and the ability to work flexibly across all our output, both from the office and on location.
* You will be a self-starter, with the initiative to find ways of delivering maximum impact for our team’s stories across the BBC, especially on digital platforms.
