Main area Operating Department Practitioner apprenticeship Grade NHS AfC: Band 2. Contract apprenticeship: 3 years (2 years paid at Band 2 salary and final year at Band 3 salary). Includes late shifts and weekends. Full‑time: 37.5 hours per week. Employer: University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. Salary: £25,272 – £27,476 per annum. Closing date 11 May 2026.
Main duties of the job
* Deliver high quality, compassionate care under the direction of a registered practitioner.
* Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS Values.
* Work as part of a designated clinical and care team focusing on the direct needs of the individual.
* Carry out delegated clinical and care tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competency, under the direction and supervision of a registered practitioner.
* Work with a supervisor to develop own clinical competence, leadership and reflective practice skills within the workplace, during placements and while attending the ODP degree apprenticeship.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, and to applicants with Priority or At Risk status, including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon, who demonstrate recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Apprentice ODPs are paid employees in Theatre Central. During the apprenticeship they are allocated as a Health and Care Support Worker for 40 % of contracted hours, with 20 % of time spent on theoretical study. 40 % practice hours are in practice placements or, during theory modules, they remain in current employment performing their role duties and gain experience across the Trust and alternative settings. Responsibilities include maintaining patient safety, providing skilled care throughout the perioperative pathway, meeting Association for Perioperative Practice (2021) Standards, achieving HCPC (2023) Standards of Proficiency, completing integrated end‑point assessment, and meeting all apprenticeship requirements.
Person specification
Knowledge and experience
* Demonstrable experience working as part of a team.
* Health and Social Care experience, including volunteering.
* Proven evidence of recent study.
* Experience working within a large clinical setting.
* Knowledge and awareness of patient care.
Qualifications
* Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care (if completed an apprenticeship, must include end‑point assessment).
* 5 GCSEs Grade A–C or equivalent, including Maths and English.
* Care Certificate (or aim to complete within 3 months of starting the course).
Aptitude and abilities
* Good verbal and written command of English.
* Basic IT skills.
* Resilience to deal with non‑routine and unpredictable workload and patient contact.
* Motivation, reliability and ability to work as part of a team.
* Ability to plan/organise own and delegated workload in a busy environment professionally.
