The Role


As an Avionics Capability Lead, you will have a role that is out of the ordinary. You will act as a key leader for our engineering and project teams at our state-of-the-art Aviation Engineering Centre (AEC). The AEC is a leader in aircraft modification, testing, and evaluation, with extensive accredited Design, Production, and Flight Test capabilities, as well as CAA Part 21 and MAA DAOS organizations. We seek a talented individual to serve as our Avionics Subject Matter Expert and Capability Lead to support and expand our high-profile engineering portfolios on exciting projects.


Day-to-day responsibilities include:
1. Ensuring the AEC fulfills optimal capability performance.
2. Collaborating with the Head of Design to develop a strategic roadmap and drive continuous improvement.
3. Providing guidance to Project Delivery Teams to meet standards and deliver avionics, communication, and aircraft electrical systems safely, within budget and schedule.
4. Building professional relationships with Project Management and Engineering teams to ensure safe and compliant project outputs.
5. Participating in a multidisciplinary team of Capability Leads to generate proposals and deliver complex projects within the AEC.

This is a full-time role, 37 hours per week, based at our MoD Boscombe Down site, with hybrid working options available.


Essential experience for the Avionics Capability Lead:

1. Deep knowledge of avionics systems, including communication, navigation, and flight control systems.
2. Strong leadership qualities with extensive senior engineering experience.
3. Significant experience with CAA Part 21.J and MAA DAOS aviation regulations and certification processes.
4. Experience as a CAA Part 21.J Compliance Verification Engineer is highly desirable.
5. Proven leadership of avionics design engineers throughout the project lifecycle, including verification, validation, testing, and customer acceptance.
6. Excellent professional communication skills, able to present technical arguments convincingly in reviews with regulators and clients.

Qualifications required:

1. A degree in an engineering subject (2.1 or higher) with relevant aircraft avionics experience.
2. Experience with CAA Part 21.J, certification routes, and operating under a Flight Test Permit to Fly.
3. Recognition as a subject matter expert in avionics, aircraft electrical, and communication system design, with significant Compliance Verification Engineer experience.
