Job Description

We are looking for a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in pain medicine to join our team at Torbay Hospital. The Chronic Pain Medical Team consists of four consultants and one GP who works within the Anaesthetic Department. Pain consultants work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver general outpatient chronic pain clinics, interventional pain lists and support to the inpatient pain service. The wider team includes physiotherapists, physical activity specialists, occupational therapists and nurses. We have good access to talking therapies and psychology representation at the weekly MDT.

Inpatient pain services are primarily nurse delivered. There are four inpatient pain nurses providing a weekday service with weekend support from the general anaesthetic emergency team. A weekly inpatient consultant session is held. There is close liaison between the inpatient and outpatient teams.

The successful applicant’s time will be split approximately equally between pain medicine and anaesthetics. They will contribute to the delivery of quality consultant‑led services in both pain medicine and anaesthesia. The anaesthesia commitment will include elective and on‑call services. The current anaesthetic on‑call rota is 1:20. Additional PAs may be available to reflect extended working days and weekend working. Provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients attending the hospital.

Weekly Timetable/Job Plan

The clinical aspect of the job is expected to be split to deliver equal amounts of chronic pain and general anaesthetics. The current anaesthetic on‑call rota is 1:20. Additional PAs may be available to reflect extended working days and weekend working.
