Young Person's Contraceptive Nurse
Opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse to join our Integrated Sexual Health Services team. The postholder will contribute to the delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centred sexual health and contraceptive care across Sunderland.
Our service provides comprehensive sexual health provision, including screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (including HIV), full contraceptive services, and support to the Termination of Pregnancy service. The role involves community‑based young people outreach and clinical sessions in the main Sexual Health Clinic with a substantial travel component. Main duties
* Providing Contraceptive Care – assess young people’s contraceptive needs sensitively, issue chosen contraception via PGD, including emergency contraception and LARCs.
* Sexual Health Screening and Treatment – conduct STI screening, assist with treatment access and partner notification, provide age‑appropriate health education about STIs, prevention and safer sex.
* Outreach Work with Vulnerable Young People – reach young people who may not access clinic‑based services.
* Safeguarding and Risk Assessment – recognise signs of exploitation, abuse, coercion or neglect, complete robust safeguarding assessments and collaborate with other agencies.
* Health Promotion and Education – deliver age‑appropriate sexual health education, promote healthy relationships, consent and self‑esteem, challenge myths and misinformation.
* Working Within a Multidisciplinary Team – contribute coordinated care for young people with complex needs, collaborating with health, social care, education and partner agencies.
* Clinic‑Based Duties – provide holistic sexual health and contraception care within the main clinic.
Person Specification
Skills and Knowledge
* Basic IT skills
* Evidence of continuous professional development
* Knowledge of facilitating learning
* Knowledge of current professional and clinical governance issues
* Knowledge of research and clinical audit
* Experience handling complex relationships and interpersonal dynamics
* Venepuncture
* Competence in insertion/removal of sub‑dermal implants
* Evidence of competency in nursing practice appropriate to the post
* Time management
* Ability to assess, deliver, evaluate and benchmark quality care
* Qualification in resource management skills, counselling and appraisal skills
Qualifications
* Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree, or evidence of currently working towards this (UK equivalent)
* Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience
* Advanced Diploma in Sexual Health or contraception or equivalent
* Clinical skills accreditation or willingness to complete
* Leadership and Management Course
* Non‑medical prescribing or willingness to complete Counselling Certificate
Experience
* Experience of care delivery
* Minimum of 2 years contraceptive experience
* Evidence of leading a team
* Evidence of leading innovation in practice
* Evidence of practice development
* Experience of coordinating care for a caseload of patients
* Participation in recruitment and selection process
* Experience in conducting research and critiquing clinical evidence
* Experience in implementing quality frameworks
Physical Skills
* Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy
* Carrying teaching equipment such as laptop, stationery, etc.
* Ability to undertake STI screening
* Must have a UK driving licence and own car access
